(Photo: Defense Commissary Agency) CONNECT 19 TWEET LINKEDIN COMMENT EMAIL MORE Lawmakers have agreed to cut commissary funding by $100 million next year compared with this year, according to a new agreement on a compromise defense authorization bill. Defense officials had proposed cutting $200 million from the Defense Commissary Agency budget that funds about 245 stores on military installations around the world, part of a three-year plan that would bring the annual commissary budget down from about $1.3 billion to $400 million. They acknowledged that the plan would shrink the commissary savings compared with average off-base grocery prices to about 10 percent from the current 30 percent, with shoppers having to cover the difference out of pocket. But by law, commissaries must sell products at cost...

Active duty and retirees expendable says the military haters in the Republican controlled House and the demoRATS that control the US Senate. Within 5 years there will be no such thing as commissaries, but you can bet your bottom dollar that the military-hating members of congress will still have their own commissary and take no hit whatsover in their outrageous pay and benefits. What does John Boehner, Harry Reid, and the vast majority of members of Congress over the age of 60 have in common. They are all a bunch of draft-dodgers that ran like a scolded dog from duty in the US military during the Vietnam era. To hell with all of them.

I hate Congress. Why did we give them another term. Sometimes Republicans are just nasty. Even Democrats wouldn’t do this. Sickening.

We need to show a little understanding here. Costs for illegal immigrants is going to go way up as a result of the President’s executive order on immigrant amnesty. These people have to have priority since they will be Democrat voters in 2016. The money has to come from somewhere.

Well Obama is going to need that money to give benefits to the 5 million new legalized illegal immigrants.

I agree with everything you say, but you know what? They can do it because no one cares. There aren’t enough of us who pay attention. I would never, ever advise anyone to serve in today’s military. Let them go back to a draft.

Why don’t we cut a couple of billion from EBT card funding?

Chip, chip, chip. That’s the sound of military benefits being lowered. What about welfare benefits? The worthless get everything, the warriors are getting nickeled and dimed to death. Changes to healthcare too. My family has been in continuous service to this nation for over 100 years. My dad called it paying the rent. I am sick over what is happening to the military.

This is only a fraction of Obumagabe's “stimulus.”

Multiple billions for pork. But, active duty and vets have to have their commissaries reduced. Repulsive.

Lawmakers are stuck on "high visibility"/"low value" economizing. They don't have the stomach for real cuts with real impact. Cowards, every last one of them.

If they took over the Federal Reserve, put a legal halt to all federal borrowing, instituted bank rules of "1-dollar loan backed by 1-dollar of assets, and started eliminating entire departments and agencies, we might just have a chance.

Meanwhile, we're still speeding toward the cliff, and judging by their actions, none of them appear to care.

Free tuition and welfare for illegal aliens that cost 100- times more than commissaries, but it is the military they choose to cut.

incredible they’d do this. they just divert this money to welfare and handouts to non-military folks who demand/expect money for doing nothing.

Having done twenty odd years of service and used the commissary both stateside and overseas....I’ll say this. Stateside, it rarely ever saves you any money...other than local/state taxes. We’d be better off to rig up a federal law which closes down the stateside commissary operations and give a tax-free status at any and all grocery stores in all fifty state to a GI with an ID card.

Overseas? Different story. You can’t shop for normal items and pay the local cost. You need the commissary to operate, and serve the local base/post.

It’s time to evaluate how the system works and if there is any real savings at stateside locations. I think we’d all be shocked by the time you add up what a bag costs today. I would agree...in the late 1970s....you did save a fair amount at the commissary. But between competition and that five-percent charge at the commissary for items bought...it’s not much of a benefit anymore.

yep, stateside commissaries are mostly redundant...have been for a long time unless they’re the only accessible store for G.I.s on a military base. Even then, their prices suck in general. If this was about common sense they would shut the commissaries and provide transportation to real stores locally, and subsidize the outlying commissaries where E-1 to E-5s have no other choice.

Same deal for the BX operations. Wal-Mart can generally beat the BX on almost all prices. Booze is the exception....mostly because of tax-free status.

I agree, I quickly learned to not bother with the Commissary when I was a married soldier.
