UW-Milwaukee revokes fraternity's charter over drunken party

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has revoked the charter of a fraternity after a party at its house Sept. 12 left several underage guests severely intoxicated and some with memory lapses they believed were caused by date rape drugs slipped into drinks.

The university initially suspended the charter of Tau Kappa Epsilon during its investigation of the party. The fraternity may petition for reinstatement after two years; that would require approval of both the student association and the dean of students.

The university launched an investigation after campus police took four incapacitated partygoers to a hospital emergency room. A university spokesman said in September that disciplinary actions would be considered against individual fraternity members, but no information about whether any student was disciplined has been made available.

Three women and one man who attended the party and were under the legal drinking age were taken to a hospital for protective custody, Assistant Dean of Students Heather Harbach noted in a letter to the fraternity outlining her findings of multiple violations of university policies and regulations.

In the letter, Harbach chastised fraternity members for disregarding all of the fraternity's own risk management policies and procedures, knowingly serving alcohol to minors, insufficiently controlling alcohol service and consumption, disregarding the safety of members and guests, and disregarding police authority and laws.

While Harbach's letter alluded to allegations of drugs being slipped into party drugs, no fraternity member has been charged with that offense. The then-president of the fraternity was charged with keeping a drug house. He has pleaded not guilty.

Let’s go loot Mayfair Mall in solidarity! ;)

Wonder if this will turn into a ‘Duke Lacrosse Team’-type scandal?

Yes, that was a silly mistake to let through.

I'm sure there are good fraternities and sororities out there.

It's too bad some make a bad name for all the others. This sounds like a frat house out of control. Still, there are bad apples in most groups. It's always the idiot few that make the majority look terrible.

The best parties I had been to in college were TKE parties.

TKE parties at UC California (Berkeley) in the 1950s had Brutus as a centerpiece. Brutus was a huge St. Bernard with a liking for beer. He’d lie in the middle of the dance floor and hope that someone would give him a sip.

My son was president of his frat at the University of Washington. He and his VP turned their own chapter in for hazing abuses in order to get rid of some alums who were out of control. The chapter had to reorganize and reapply for recognition. The actives all backed my son.

When I was in Engineering School the student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers had a few student steel bridge competition principal players that were in TKE. When the school refused to assist the kids with the steel bridge they took the bridge to the TKE house.

I was an M.E. but structural design, and my experience with fabrication and welding made me a good fit with these guys... plus ASCE had girls, a number of REALLY cute girls... as opposed to the M.E. program that had 3 girls, total... only one of which was a looker... Anyways we had the welder rigged into the power panel downstairs to get 220VAC and the bridge and the chopsaw and all the structural steel out back on the raised concrete stage they had for outdoor parties... then it started to rain. We hauled all the furniture out of the main living room (dance floor) and set up the bridge inside for final assembly... picture grinders throwing sparks everywhere, and welding inside your living room... with a tight deadline to the competition... pulling all-nighters fed by a LOT of pizza, beer and black coffee.

Not a peep from the TKE brothers... they all actually took an interest in the project... and for a while it was like I had pledged TKE and was now a part of the fraternity, and even after the competition we all had an open invite to hang out at the house whenever we wanted.

Good times. GOOD TIMES.

A party with alcohol at a TKE house.

Now I have heard everything.

One of my brothers worked a catered party at a country club one hot summer. He came back to the house with a cooler full of oysters, a cooler of steamed oysters and a cooler of beer. We sat on the porch and tore into them. After we were done, someone asked what we should do with the leftover oysters.

We shoved them in the crawl space under the TKE house.

The war's over, man...Harbach dropped the big one.

We shoved them in the crawl space under the TKE house.

The karma wheel turns.

One summer, we TKEs caught enough blue fish down the Jersey shore to fill two huge coolers - more fish than we could fit in the freezer.

Late that night, we put the remaining fish in the air ducts at ZBT. It was August.

Otter: Dead! Bluto's right. Psychotic... but absolutely right. We gotta take these bastards. Now we could do it with conventional weapons, but that could take years and cost millions of lives. No, I think we have to go all out. I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part!

Bluto: We're just the guys to do it.
