The New GOP Showdown Threat (Will NOT Impeach Obama)
New York Times ^ | November 27, 2014

Posted on 11/28/2014 6:45:01 AM PST by Din Maker

Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama announced that Republicans had decided not to impeach President Obama over his plan to allow millions of immigrants to remain in this country without fear of deportation through his executive authority. But that concession is not the end of the matter. He is planning much more serious mischief: using Congress’s power of the purse to pressure the White House into backing off.

Condemning the immigration action as “unlawful,” Mr. Sessions says he and other Republicans may filibuster any attempt to pay for government operations through the full fiscal year, which ends Oct. 1. Instead, he wants to pay for government through a series of short-term bills, possibly month to month, with each one trying to overturn Mr. Obama’s actions.

That raises the possibility of a budget shutdown fight every month for nearly a year. And Mr. Sessions’ voice will count in that fight — he is in line to be the new chairman of the Budget Committee.

Some Republican leaders, including the next majority leader, Senator Mitch McConnell, have tried to take a loftier position, saying they want a full year’s spending bill to avert a widespread shutdown. Nonetheless, they are seriously considering using short-term bills to pay for immigration enforcement. That approach is an implicit and reckless threat to close down immigration agencies to prevent them from issuing work permits to immigrants.

In the House, Speaker John Boehner has refused to rule out the possibility of threatening either a narrow or a full-scale shutdown to get Mr. Obama to back off his plans.

Another FReeper posted a comment sometime back that closing the purse strings that would finance Obama's Immigration Plan is much more effective than Impeachment. By the time the Impeachment Process was completed, Obama would only have a couple of months left in office and nothing would be accomplished because The Senate and House would be tied up with the process. So, just cut off th money. Makes sense to me.

The impeachment process would take less than two years?

That’s funny. How many years ago was Benghazi? The IRS scandal discovery? Issas fast and furious?

Who would run it?

Crazy talk

He (Sessions) is planning much more serious mischief: using Congress’s power of the purse to pressure the White House into backing off.

Trust me; the Dems and Libs of America would MUCH rather see an Impeachment attempt than this. This could actually "cripple" Obama for his last two years. Impeachment would just make him a living martyr. IMO..... if the House does Impeach (like they did Clinton), the chicken s**t Senate would never vote two-thirds to convict. Just a waste of time.

The GOP is dead, despite the fact that America hates liberals.

Stick a fork in ‘em.

I feel like the media is grabbing us by the hair on the back of our head and slamming our face into a steel table every day with the impeachment stuff.

Do us all a favor, MSM, and unless our representatives have a change of heart and decide to pursue impeachment, stop telling us that they won’t. We’re tired of hearing it. It’s just noise at this point intended to stoke the fires of the conservative electorate.

Obama deserves impeachment. Republicans don’t have the votes in the Senate to do it. Unless a faction of Democrats splits away, which won’t happen, it can’t be done. All impeachment would do is sweep all other issues off the table, frame the 2016 elections as a referendum on Republicans trying to remove the first black president, and in the background, empower Obama for even more sweeping unilateral actions.

Why would the impeachment process take so long?

What these Republicans in congress fail to recognize is that their is no other move.................

By allowing the Executive to break the law...... and TRUMP the Legislative Branch.....

Anything they do.... CAN BE TRUMPED!

Because the President, by Executive Order, will TRUMP that too........ Connect the dots!

If the Executive Branch is allowed to illegally break the law by Executive Action, then the Excutive branch can do that with ANYTHING..........

Here is the translation for the dumb Republicans in congress that still do not get it.....

The Executive Branch will TRUMP your “purse strings” too.... Duh!!

The Executive branch knows that by congress cowarding and doing ABSOULTLY NOTHING... they have basically become ceremonial at this point.

WHAT THEY PASS FROM HERE FORTH... DOES NOT MEAN JACK to the Excursive Branch.

At this point any signings by the Executive Brach,,,,,is simply to make these gutless collaborators feel like they are still relevant.

Congratulations Republicans in Congress. You have turned the U.S. Constitution on it’s head. And THAT.... is the way you will be remembered for in history

I think three simple actions would take him down a big notch. First, in early January....run the vote in the House and Senate to have a written State of the Union address only....no verbal delivery. Second, have the Senate request a special prosecutor over the IRS stuff...if denied....run Senate hearings for all of 2015 over the topic. Third, deny his picks for Attorney General, and force Holder to sit there until summer of next year.

The only problem is the GOP doesn’t have balls to do even one of those things.

Shutdown/partial shutdown/defunding would be much more effective than impeachment.

“What these Republicans in congress fail to recognize is that their is no other move.................”

What you and all the pro-impeachment crowd fail to recognize that it takes sixty seven votes in the senate to remove Obama from office. Until you can name 13 Democrat Senators who would commit political suicide by voting to remove the First Black President, you’re wee weeing into the wind.

The GOP has always had the power to stop Obama Ted Cruz illustrated that. And he has been vilified for it by all btw

The house has control of the money.

Sitting back and doing nothing has been good It has shown obamacare, Obama and our destruction to be what it is, a liberals outcome

Mow what are they going to do? More of nothing, allowing schumer to take the credit, and then spending all of their energy destroying Cruz, not Obama.

If you told the GOP to impeach Cruz they’d be all over it like white on rice

And the constituents are right there. They expect candidates and pols to be perfect, appealing to Jon Stewart, good looking and completely scandal free while that ugly angry foreigner marches through destroying everything

He just destroyed thanksgiving. You can’t have stores open on a federal holiday. But now Thanksgiving our national retreat day has been turned into a sale day. Mattress sales on thanksgiving

He turned the chamber of commerce and our greed against is

Boehmite and McConnell are going to do what all of a sudden and fix that?

We like to have Obama to blame for our own destruction.

But all we have to do is the work of getting out country back

We’ll destroy Cruz and anyone who tries

Impeachment. Right
