WITH all the pomp and ceremony that the Navy can muster, its biggest ever ship HMAS Canberra will join the fleet at Garden Island this morning.
More than 1500 people will attend its launch in the 27,500 tonne amphibious attack vessels helicopter hangar.
Governor-general Sir Peter Cosgrove, Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Navy Chief Vice Admiral Tim Barrett will welcome the ship to the Royal Australian Navy.
Mr Abbott was given a VIP tour of the ship prior to the ceremony.
The guests include more than 800 family members of the ships 400-strong tri-service crew.
The commissioning ceremony will begin with a parade of the ships company followed by a Bible reading by Navy chaplain Colin Acton and the breaking out of the Australian White ensign and the national flag and speeches from the guests of honour.

Her Majesty's Australian Ship Canberra
HMAS >< Huge Mean-A** Ship
Not exactly another Iowa Class BB...
In many ways, the most important thing about her (and her sister to come, Adelaide) is the statement that Australia intends to maintain bluewater capability.
She looks like a modernized Iwo Jima class (LPH-2) with a ski jump fitted on the bow.
Somewhat similar in concept yes - a bit closer to the Wasp Class than the Iwo Jima - smaller and very modernised in comparison (it has been twenty-five years after all since USS Wasp entered service) but I think that's the closest comparison to US service.
Ship shape and Bristol fashion! An extra ration of rum for the whole crew.

Why, yes! Of course! THAT is a ship!
That is the most unusual picture of an Iowa class BB (in this case, USS New Jersey (BB-62) I have ever seen. Had to have been especially staged just for “effect.”
It’s tempting to posit that they felt the need to fire port and starboard broadsides rather than just one to avoid capsizing when I see a picture like that :)
Well, I can tell you FRom personal experience that there is absolutely no chance of an Iowa BB capsizing during a full broadside!
It looks strange to me.
Too high and too narrow. I guess they built it for performance rather than looks.
Congratulations on a proud ship and the will to defend what’s yours.
Are there any guns on it at all?
What a whip @ss machine.
Six 12.7mm machine guns and 4 25mm Typhoon RWS.
Thank you. I am glad to know that.
I would hate to think that it could not fend off a bunch of Iranian speed boats.
She’ll have escorts - but, yeah, you never want a warship to be without its own close in defence no matter what you’re planning or expecting.
Who builds a warship with only half a bow?
The Spanish Navy operates a Harrier squadron on this design.
