Have you ever seen the movie, The Beast? It came out in 1988 about the Russians in Afghanistan. The Afghani people are fiercely independent and even drove the Brits out a hundred years prior. No one in their right mind invades Afghanistan.

Rubbish. It doesn’t take much effort to defeat Afghanistan. The problem is its not worth any efforts to hold a foot there at all which is finally realized by any invader after a few time.
What do you want to fight for there? Poppy? Would they scream to legalize heroin following conversion of Afghanistan from a failed state?
It makes more sense for many involved groups to keep it a hellhole with an ‘invincible myth’ to make illegal profit.
You’re right, afghans like to be independent. Who doesn’t? The brits did nothing, only destroy afghanistan, which in fact back then was part of Iran. Typically the brits in their colonial mode were overlords who helped patition lands when the going got tough for them or ardent islamists in those lands revolted. That has always been a brit strategy to divide & keep those lands weak & under control. Look at india and pakistan, for the partition alone. Afghanistan was quite prosperous during the 1960s & at least first half of 1970s. The mess thereafter can be attributed mostly to the islamists movements & agitation there. Actually, i never liked the Soviets. But given a BAD choice ONLY between the Soviets and Islamists ie the Taliban or similar, i would’ve taken the Soviets.
