How Governments Destroy Cities
Accuracy in Academia ^ | November 25, 2014 | Malcolm A. Kline

Academics have long vexed over urban studies, putting the flight out of major cities down to everything from technology to racism.

Yet and still, in the last half century, “some cities were not declining despite these immutable forces and some cities turned around despite these forces,” Stephen J. K Walters pointed out in a seminar on November 20, 2014 at the Cato Institute. Walters is an economist at Loyola University in Baltimore.

“If you want a healthy city, secure the property rights that go with capital,” Walters advised. One way of doing so is through tax cuts.

When California voters passed Proposition 13 in the late 1970s, the Golden State’s major cities experienced something of a Renaissance. For example, “Between 1950 and 1975 San Francisco doubled its tax rate and lost 100,000 residents,” Walters pointed out. “San Francisco raised property taxes 18 times between 1950 and 1975.”

“When Proposition 13 passed, it saved San Francisco from itself.” People actually started moving there again.

Proposition 13 capped taxes across the board in California at one percent. And, “Within four years of Proposition 13, San Francisco’s tax revenues exceeded their pre-Proposition 13 levels,” Walters noted. Walters is the author of Boom Towns: Restoring the Urban American Dream, which is published by the Stanford University Press. As well, Mark Zupan, an economist with the University of Rochester, pointed out that Oklahoma City experienced a turnaround after the state passed a right to work law.

Zupan was on the panel with Walters.

Asia is full of highly functional and relatively safe cities: Tokyo, Singapore, Seoul, Osaka, Kobe, Yokohama . . . just to name a few. Of course, Democrats are in charge of none of those cities.

Cut taxes, yes. But I would also add two other things: 1) cut anti-business regulations, and 2) restore property rights to landlords by eliminating rent-control and no-eviction policies.

Having a (D) next to the mayor’s name is definitely a prerequisite for delay!

I like to ask the ‘over intelligent Libs’ (oximoron squared) which is worse Liberalism or Atomic Bombs/Energy etc

Naturally they will ‘condemn’ the Atom anything and I just point out pictures of say Nagasaki/Hiroshima in 1945 and Detroit/Washington DC/Chicago/Oakland etal in 1963.
Seemingly the cities we ‘DOOMED TO DEATH’ FOREVER are bustling, modern, well built cities while the D led cities are in disruption and overrun with boarded up buildings and ramshackle homes, falling apart..

Just further ‘proof’ that LIBERALS are more dangerous to a cities health, prosperity and well being than Atomic Bombs etc.

Outlaw public sector unions and limit rental properties to no more than 1/3 of housing units. Problem solved.

Freepers push their blogs and books all the time.

“If you want a healthy city, secure the property rights that go with capital.”

At first blush it looks like a book worth reading.

Machiavelli's Discourses on Livy spoke the same language, just replace "city" with "republic."

Drastic changes were made to my city, Los Angeles. Most of those changes involved just a handful of people, the police chief, the City Council, union leaders and judges. I live in the San Fernando Valley, a part of Los Angeles with about 3 million people. The fact that Americans moved out of the San Fernando Valley attests to the fact that we didn’t want to live in a third world city and didn’t agree with our elected officials or the courts. What can you do about the courts?

The states of Mississippi, Arkansas, Utah, Kansas, Nevada, New Mexico, Nebraska, West Virginia, Idaho, Hawaii, Main, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Montana, Delaware, South Dakota, Alaska, North Dakota, D.C., Vermont, and Wyoming all have less than 3 million people.

Los Angeles County has 9,818,605 people, making it the country’s largest county. That makes Los Angeles County more populace than 42 states, so what happens here should be a forewarning.

The importation of foreigners throughout America is Obama’s intent on destroying America’s sovereignty. I expect he will be seen as the “Johnny Appleseed” of a One World Order.

Below, I picked out 5 schools at random in the 4 corners of the SFV and one in the center.

In 1977, The California Supreme Court ordered the Los Angeles School District to come up with a plan to desegregate their schools. The school district came up with forced bussing and parents moved out of the Los Angeles School District.

It was called “White Flight”. Homes became hard to sell, apartments were hard to rent and schools started closing. Illegal aliens replaced Americans in Los Angeles. Teachers and all government employees answering to the gods of the unions turned against Americans.

Special Order 40 is a police mandate implemented in 1979 by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), its Police Chief Daryl Gates and the Los Angeles City Council preventing LAPD officers from questioning people for the sole purpose of determining their immigration status. The mandate was passed in an effort to encourage residents who are in the country illegally to report crimes without intimidation. The order states:

Officers shall not initiate police action with the objective of discovering the alien status of a person.
Officers shall not arrest nor book persons for violation of title 8, section 1325 of the United States Immigration code (Illegal Entry).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_Order_40

Los Angeles became a sanctuary city.

In 1992 Cardinal Roger Mahony said 771 lives in Los Angeles County were lost last year due to gang violence and brought terror to families.

Back in 1994, Californians had had enough and voted for proposition 187, it passed 58.93% to 41.07%.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Proposition_187_%281994%29
Proposition 187 included the following key elements:

All law enforcement agents who suspect that a person who has been arrested is in violation of immigration laws must investigate the detainee’s immigration status, and if they find evidence of illegality they must report it to the attorney general of California, and to the federal Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). They must also notify the detainee of his or her apparent status as an alien.

Local governments are prohibited from preventing or limiting the fulfillment of this requirement.

If government agents suspect anyone applying for benefits of being illegal immigrants, the agents must report their suspicions in writing to the appropriate enforcement authorities.

A person shall not receive any public social services until he or she has been verified as a United States citizen or as a lawfully admitted alien.

A person shall not receive any health care services from a publicly funded health care facility until he or she meets the requirements above.

A public elementary or secondary school shall not admit or permit the attendance of any child until he or she meets the requirements above.

By 1996, each school district shall verify the legal status of each child enrolled within the district and the legal status of each parent or guardian of each child.

A child who is in violation of the requirements above shall not continue to attend the school 90 days from the date of notice to the attorney general and INS.

The attorney general must keep records on all such cases and make them available to any other government entity that wishes to inspect them.

The manufacture, distribution, sale, or use of false citizenship or residency documents is a state felony punishable by imprisonment or fine.

Judge Mariana Pfaelzer overturned the majority of the law. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mariana_Pfaelzer

http://www.antibiaslaw.com/westchester-false-claims-case/federal-judge-westchester-made-false-claims-us-over-6year-period
Judge Denise Cote rules that the federal government’s zoning laws supersede local zoning laws forcing housing for the poor in all neighborhoods. This judgment means that you can no longer expect to move up to a better neighborhood with better and safer schools. Expect high density apartments to move into your neighborhood along a transportation corridor.

Isn’t that what Obama’s decision to import illegal alien children is all about, to implant the seed to an open society, free of borders, place these kids throughout the United States to places that refused to be sanctuary cities? Cities that will have to school, house and feed these kids. Government dependent kids.

His plan is to do the same with granting asylum to millions of illegal aliens, make them government dependent. You will not hear a requirement of these illegal aliens to be self-sufficient or to get an education. Every city is now a sanctuary city.

Judge Denise Cote knows exactly what she is doing. She is pushing this Agenda 21 United Nations BS on us in the guise of being green. It is really a means of redistributing wealth to people that have no desire to fit in, to get an education or to even learn English. People that will work under the table so they can get all the government freebies.

What they are doing in Los Angeles now is creating streets for busses, no cars allowed. Along these bus lines they are building high-density housing against our own zoning laws. The developer is allowed to build higher if they designate one third of the housing to the poor.

These bus lines are built at surface street level on purpose to obstruct traffic. The idea behind this is to create enough traffic to where people will be forced into this high-density housing and take public transportation.

In another effort to increase traffic, the city changed their zoning laws to allow second homes on property that is over 12,000 square feet. The city is also removing lanes on our streets and turning them into bicycle paths and what they call mini-parks. They had a proposal to build a football stadium with no parking.

Our mayor ran a campaign to create high-density housing and 100 percent electric cars. Our city already owns 30,000 low income housing units and Mayor Garcetti wants 30,000 more.

Somehow I don’t think the citizens voted for this. There has to be voter fraud involved. What Judge Cote is doing is trying to make sure there is no other city to run to.

Our vote means nothing anymore. It is a judge, it only takes one, that will create the laws on immigration, abortion, voter ID, marriage, health, and our freedoms.

In 2011 Newt Gingrich at Values Voter Summit – How to Fight Back Against Out-of-Control Judges speech Newt said at the 4:54 mark: “One of the major reasons that I am running for President of the United States is the 9th Circuit Court decision in 2002 that ‘One Nation Under God’ in the Pledge of Allegiance was unconstitutional”

At the 6:48 mark, Newt says: “…because if judges think they are unchallengeable they are inedible corrupt. Corrupted in a moral sense. I don’t mean taking money, but I mean in a sense of arrogance, in the sense of imposing on the rest of us. Whether it is one judge in California deciding he knows more than 8 million Californians about the definition of marriage, whether it is a judge San Antonio who rules that not only can school children can not say a prayer at their graduation, they can not use the word benediction, they can not use the word invocation, they can not use the word God, they can not ask the audience to stand, and if they do any of these things, he will lock up their superintendent.

Now the idea of an American judge becoming a dictator of words is so alien to our tradition, and such a violation of our Constitution as I will explain in a moment, that that judge should be removed from office summarily. “

At the 10:53 mark, Newt says: “Jefferson is the most clear example of taking on the judiciary, in the Judicial Reform Act of 1802, the Jeffersonians eliminated 18 out of 35 federal judges. Didn’t impeach them, just abolish their office and told them to go home.

Now I’m not, let me be clear, I am not as bold as Jefferson. I think the judge in San Antonio would be an important initial signal and I think the 9th Circuit Court should be served notice that it runs the risk of ceasing to exist.”

Black and Latino Americans: WAKE UP!

"The over-riding segments of the population that enabled Barack Obama's victory in 2012 were the Black vote (who voted for him by over 90%) and the Latino vote (who voted for him by over 70%).

"And they did so, absolutely against their own best interest.

"Oh, in the short term it can certainly be argued that Obama's campaign of "social justice," and equalizing the playing field from his perspective...which perspective is a socialist, redistribution of wealth perspective at best, and a Marxist perspective at worst, is appealing to voters who find themselves as a group the most negatively impacted in terms of employment, family stability, poverty, and crime rates in the nation, and particularly during this long standing economic down turn.

"When a politician promises specifically to "right these wrongs," and to give these voting blocks "stuff," be it contraceptives, food stamps, a portion of other people's income, free school loans, easier housing, etc., etc. one can see why people would be tempted to vote for them. And make no mistake, that is exactly what the progressive left is doing, as they have done for decades. Dangling entitlements and free "stuff," in front of people in an effort to buy their vote.

"But everything has a cost...as we shall see...and the cost is horrific for those whose life styles, livelihoods, and social positioning are adversely impacted.

"Despite it being hard to look beyond the entitlements and hand-outs, it is all the more important to examine the record of the politicians promising such things. Perhaps they do so to hide their actual record. What they have actually done (or not done) for these constituencies, is a critical determination to make before making a decision as to who should lead this nation and address its economic and social problems.

"This nation spends over a trillion dollars on welfare every year. Since the inception of the "Great Society" under Lyndon Johnson in the 1960s, this nation has spent tens of trillions of dollars at the behest of the progressive left to try and "equalize," things by "giving" away money, perks, food stamps, house loans, school loans, etc., etc.

"Have things improved?

"No, they have not.

"By abandoning the time honored and proven methods of hard work, personal accountability and responsibility, advancement due to merit, and the natural competiveness and reward of the free market, these socialist policies have failed...and are failing here in the United States, and failing miserably...just like they have everywhere else on earth they have been attempted." "

It goes on to share the demographic and statistical data in detail.

Every American should see it...and particularly Black and Latino Americans. The facts do not lie.

All the sympathetic riots and protesting are occurring in the democrat worker's paradise cities. I'll bet you can't find a city with a Republican mayor in the bunch, making the news now.

When I used to travel I could always tell a city with a dim mayor. The streets were always torn up and the gas prices were high.
