The Ferguson Grand Jury:

Here is a breakdown of some of the most pressing questions:

How many votes are needed to get an indictment? At least 9 out of 12 St. Louis County residents who make up the grand jury, must vote to indict.

The jury consists of 6 white men, 3 white women, 2 black women and 1 black man. Their ages have not been released. St. Louis County's racial make-up is 70 percent white, but, Ferguson is about two-thirds black

Was impaneled in May for a four-month term but starting on Aug. 20, they began working exclusively on this case Their term was scheduled to expire on Sept. 10, but was extended until Jan. 7, which is the maximum allowed by law.

They will continue to meet until a decision is reached on whether to indict Wilson and they normally meet once a week on Wednesdays -- but the prosecutor's office said early on that additional days would be added as necessary. We do not know precisely how many times they have met

Unlike some juries in high-profile cases, this grand jury has NOT been sequestered

Since there was more then “zero” listed as “white” the GJ verdict will be forever tainted.

How did they get a jury of that makeup? It would almost have to be intentional.

This will just be part of their on-going excuse for their violence.

How is a Grand Jury even selected? I’ve been called for Jury Duty for criminal trials. Are Grand Jurors selected the same way?

The few brushes I have had with jury duty...now that I think about it...we were all white.

I imagine its partially a matter of who shows up.

In Harris County, Houston, TX - you have to volunteer to be on a grand jury. Then out of the selected volunteers (after a background check) 12 jurors are selected along with 2 spares.

How is a Grand Jury even selected?

In Missouri, the GJ presiding judge picks the jurors at random. Dunno from what pool he picks from, though.

Ah, here you go. Looks like similar process for GJ versus "petit" jurors:

Grand Jury Service; U.S. District Court Western District of Missouri

The Grand Jury Pool

The pool of potential grand jurors includes all persons living in the community under the court’s jurisdiction. The court randomly chooses grand juror candidates from among this pool. The clerk of courts identifies candidates from public records such as registered voters and licensed drivers.

Eligibility

U.S. law requires that everyone selected for federal grand jury duty be U.S. citizens over the age of 18, and having lived within the court’s judicial district for at least one year. Jurors must be sufficiently fluent in the English language to complete the court’s selection questionnaire and have no pending felony charges or felony convictions on their records. They also must have no physical or mental disabilities making them unable to serve.

Selection

To determine the eligibility of prospective jurors, the clerk of the court sends each a mandatory questionnaire to complete and return. The court then randomly selects grand jurors from among the candidates eligible to serve according to their questionnaire answers. Each selected juror receives a summons to appear for jury duty at the courthouse on the scheduled date and time

The lesson coming out of all this is that don’t be a white cop in a community where you are the minority. Also, if you can move out of areas where you are a minority, do it
. And, don’t visit or travel to areas where you are in the minority.

It is a horrible shame, and not good for our country. It is not good for anyone; white, black or other. This is sad.

“St. Louis County’s racial make-up is 70 percent white, but, Ferguson is about two-thirds black”

Except for that pesky fact that it is a County GJ, and St Louis County is about 70% white!

The liberal media is stirring up crap where none exists.

Assuming you’re speaking of Petit Juries, not Grand Juries, I’m thinking that varies from County to County and State to State. I know that in Jefferson Co., TX, after the first day, the pay goes up considerably; something like $45 a day.

Exactly right. This too, "this grand jury has NOT been sequestered." As far as I know, GRAND juries are never sequestered. They get to see as much evidence as the prosecutor wants, without regard to rulings of admissibility that might arise in trial context.

I was on a Federal Grand Jury for 18 months in the mid-80s. There were 20+ of us. Seems like we were all white. We got $30/day + mileage

A lot of variables from State to State. Grand Juries are NOT limited to 12 members. Some have 20+ people serving on the GJ at one time.
