Bye Buffalo. See you when you resurface in April. Well, maybe June next year instead.

I would make jokes about Al Whore and his global warming scam but that snow is creating serious hardship for those poor people. On another forum a guy’s talking about his friend, a truck driver, stuck in his truck around Buffalo. The snow’s so deep the driver can’t even see the cars around him.

And this is only the first big storm. Winter is still almost a month away. Hopefully the great lakes will freeze over and stop this kind of snow.

Members of the wife's side of the family live in south Buffalo, West Seneca, Orchard Park, Depew in Western New York State.

Depending on which family member we manage to get through to either via phone, text or facebook (well, it's good for something) they're all stranded with anywhere between 4 feet and nearly seven feet of snow plus drifting, piling up outside their homes.

Thankfully everyone's safe and the reality is these types snowstorms are not uncommon for that area. Family members there are pretty well stocked up for the winter and aren't in dire need of food, etc.. Amazingly, the electricity is still on, water's still flowing and toilets are flushing.

This could be a whole lot worse than it is. They're used to dealing with it. Some of the pictures we've gotten back via email and facebook are incredible. One uncle's driveway has the snow piled so high on each side it's well over his 6'4" head. He was lucky -- he kept snow throwing as the snow came down but the only thing he managed to do is keep his driveway and front door open. Lotta good that'll do, I guess if he wants to drive his car back and forth on his driveway he's all set -- snowplow won't be down his street for another two days or so.

BTW: Buffalo snow plows are incredible machines if you haven't seen one yet....

This is usually about Michigan, but I guess it can apply to Buffalo too.

60° F: Arizonans shiver uncontrollably; people in Buffalo are still sunbathing.

50° F: Californians try to turn on the heat; people in Buffalo plant gardens.

40° F: Italian sports cars won’t start; people in Buffalo drive with the windows down.

32° F: Distilled water freezes; Lake Erie water gets thicker.

20° F: Floridians don coats, thermal underwear, gloves and wool hats; people in Buffalo throw on a light jacket.

15° F: People in Buffalo have the last cookout before it gets cold.

0° F: All the people in Phoenix die. Buffalonians close the windows.

10° below zero: Californians fly away to Mexico . The Girl Scouts in Buffalo are selling cookies door to door.

25° below zero: Hollywood disintegrates; people in Buffalo get out their winter coats.

40° below zero: Washington, DC runs out of hot air; people in Buffalo let the dogs sleep indoors.

100° below zero: Santa Claus abandons the North Pole. Buffalonians get frustrated because they can’t start the car.

460° below zero: All atomic motion stops (absolute zero on the Kelvin scale); people in Buffalo start saying, “Cold enough for ya?”

500° below zero: Hell freezes over. The Bills win the Super Bowl.

A few years back I had to work in Buffalo for a month (in August) Absolutely loved it. Weather was beautiful, I enjoyed the area, good times. But I repeat, it was August.

Blame it on the Obama. He said that the earth would begin to heal, the oceans would cease to rise ie global warming would stop. Since he can control everything on earth, he obviously did this. /s

Until you have personally dealt with a storm like this, it is hard to imagine what life is like in such places.

Around the Watertown area, older houses can have doors on the second floor for use after such storms. I did not see this around Buffalo.

I used to go shovel out around the street fire hydrant--they are usually marked with a yellow stake many feet tall.

People put up 6-7 foot stakes at the end of their driveways and put bright plastic bottles on them so they can aim their snowblowers properly.
