Cold temperatures and snow across the Great Lakes in November is certainly nothing out of the ordinary, but this morning, a layer of ice was visible on parts of Lake Superior in Ashland, Wis.
While this may not seem unusual given the current stretch of unseasonably cold temperatures, it is actually several weeks earlier than normal.
The first sightings of ice on Lake Superior and the Great Lakes overall usually occur during the beginning to middle of December. However, a perfect combination of last season's record ice coverage, cooler summer temperatures, and an early blast of arctic air this fall has allowed for areas of ice to form earlier than normal for the second year in a row.
Last winter featured relentless, record breaking cold leading to the second highest ice coverage on record for the Great Lakes as a whole.
Lake Superior also set a record for the longest length of time that ice was observed on the lake. In 2013, ice was first observed on Nov. 25, and it did not all melt until early June 2014.

Because of global warming, I may need to buy a warmer jacket.
I call BS on this story, we all know that Human caused Global Warming means that NO AMERICAN will ever see snow or ice again in the United States, see Al Gore
I wasn’t aware that these sorts of things ran on a schedule.
Highs here have been 40 degrees below the normal highs for this time of year. Snow on the ground.
Global warming my ...
Yep I was thinking about that song. The gales of November come with the changes of seasons. Seasons have been changing for eons. Long before global warming became a liberal cause, we have seen seasons change. Liberals don’t seem to quite grasp the concept of seasons changing.
I haven’t followed it closely this year — it the temporary cause of the cooling being termed a “polar vortex”, or have they come up with a different term/different excuse?
The big typhoon that skimmed Japan on the east side then went up into the Aleutians. Cold headed south over North America to make room for it (non-technical explanation).
Well, if any ‘RATS in your area ask, tell them that, yes, the ice looks thick enough to walk on.
Ice all over the ponds around here and in the roadside ditches too just north of Milwaukee.
FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.
Which Lake is that? Or, is that a nearby river?
That’s where I live here in Southern Michigan.
You know I recently had a leftist tell me with a straight face that the cooler temperatures we’re now experiencing is due to global warming. I laughed right in his face and even he realized how stupid he sounded at that moment.
Lake Barney, across the road from me (a 30 acre lake, but only 6’ deep at the most) is frozen solid.
