At least they are trying to survive.

The model is, you build a site that attracts lots of visitors. Then you charge advertisers to show ads to the visitors.
You won't be able to get away with a paywall unless you have specialized content that a select audience finds sufficiently valuable. E.g., deep investment analysis with $$$ at stake.
It's kind of interesting how Prince Rupert tries to cheat on the paywall concept. If you go directly to one of his properties (e.g., WSJ), you hit his paywall. But if you get there via a Google search, he lets you in. Idea being to hook you on content, then charge? Too simple. He needs to give it up!
In really small towns the reporter, editor, layout person and stuff could all be the same person.
Why would anyone subscribe to a newspaper? Everything you can get from a newspaper, from news, sports, weather, want ads, jobs, comics, coupons, etc., you can find on the net for free.
