ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Independent candidate Bill Walker has won the Alaska governor's race, following an aggressive challenge to Republican Gov. Sean Parnell that included joining campaigns with a Democratic rival.

"I am beyond myself with excitement," Walker said Friday evening. "It has been a long, long journey with a whole lot of Alaskans at my side."(continued)

I thought nobody listened to former Governor Sarah Palin up there any more? That's what the Interwebs and the idiot box told me.

what did the republican do that caused sarah to endorse the guy that joined the democrat?

I suspect she gets a pass, but FR has loudly condemned people for less.

Unfortunate endorsement and I don’t expect a liberal RINO Guv and Communist Democrat Lt Guv team to be an improvement over Gov. Parnell.

Walker is in favor of Obamacare’s medicaid expansion. I don’t know what Palin was thinking.

She felt Parnell betrayed her on an issue. It was too personal and short-sighted an endorsement, ranking even worse than the endorsement of McCain in 2010.

It was personal. Why would she endorse Parnell after the things he did and said?

Wasn't one of her signature moments as governor of Alaska to successfully stand up to the oil baron cronies?

Apparently Parnell's actions went against this, so, as others have stated, it became personal.

It appears many split their ballots between Sullivan and Walker so I think she had an impact.

Best would have been to say nothing. Give no endorsement. Parnell was ahead until the endorsement came for Walker.

I would have expected no endorsement, but she knows Parnell better than we do

“She felt Parnell betrayed her on an issue. It was too personal and short-sighted an endorsement, ranking even worse than the endorsement of McCain in 2010.”

That was my understanding too. Palin, bless her heart, screwed the oil companies BIG-TIME with her extraction taxes - and she still considers it her biggest accomplishment there. So big, that some were in the process of shutting down operations. Parnell tried to correct this overreach (not sure if he did), and for that, he got the wrath of Palin.

The nice thing about Palin is, like Ross Perot was to us (and Obama is to Democrats), we can PROJECT whatever we want about her and she simply becomes that. In this case, we can project that she supports the oil industry, and regardless of what I just described, we can continue to believe that is really the case.

Bummer for Parnell.

because he’s not the democrat, or allied with the democrat? that would be a couple of great reasons, right there.

My impression has always been that Palin supports oil drilling and energy self-sufficiancy... not necessarily always the same thing as supporting the “oil industry.”

I’m glad Palin’s choice won. I trust her more than I have any trust in the GOP. Especially the Alaskan GOP, rife with sleaze and cronyism.

Walker is a Republican he is just not a Republican beholden to oil interests. The issue was over the fee that Alaska charges oil companies for drilling on state land. Some call this a tax but it is not. The companies do not own these resources the people of Alaska does and the “tax” provides a direct return to the individual Alaskan citizen which is a good thing.

I’m guessing she knows more about the ins-and-outs of Alaskan politics and culture than you and I do.
