Britain has just a 50-50 chance of remaining in the European Union, Sir John Major has warned, saying that opposition to continued membership of the European Union has reached “a critical mass”.

In a speech in Berlin on Thursday Sir John warned that Britain’s frustration was “no game”, adding: “There is a very real risk of separation that could damage the future of the United Kingdom—and Europe as a whole.”

Sir John—who was a pro-European during his time as Prime Minister from 1990 and 1997—also said that it was time officials in the European Union recognized real concern in the UK about immigration.

He said: “Our small island simply cannot absorb the present and projected numbers at the current speed: it is not physically or politically possible without huge public disquiet.” …

Well, that is the thanks you got from the EU for helping them get rid of Maggie Thatcher, you see.

Typical socialist/liberal: They want your money by force but they want to keep their own money. Germany is doing better than the rest of the EU so now the socialist want to keep the money.

But how many and what proportion of the problem immigrants are coming from EU countries versus Commonwealth countries? The EU may have its own problems, but it looks like the UK's immigration problems are self inflicted.

Not self inflicted at all. The EU membership is what leaves their borders wide open and right now they have a big influx of Romanians and others from poor countries flooding in causing many of the same problems that we are having via Mexico. Britian needs to get out of the EU. These big super massive central governments are a bad idea. Ours no longer works and the Brits should be thankful they still have a change to get out without a Civil war.

I read an article a few days ago about Italy. Italians are flooded with an endless stream of immigrants from Africa. Italy has plenty of Mediterranean coast and not that much of coast guard. The African version of coyotes is not any gentler than the Mexican one. They are sending thousands of those boats, and most of them make it. However Italy's economy is not that great... so what does a poor immigrant do? Of course he immediately moves to another country within the EU, where in his opinion he will be better off. UK, with its "generous with welfare" and "soft on crime" policies, is a good destination.

Great Britain will be better in the long run out of the EU.

Nope. The EU pushes “freedom of movement for its citizens”. Of course, the movement seems to follow a pattern that the EU elites prefer.

And what you describe is exactly why countries with big govt social programs can not have open borders.
