WaPo: Senate Dems may pass Keystone XL approval — to rescue Mary Landrieu

How desperate are Democrats to salvage the one Senate seat they still haven’t quite lost in the midterm elections? Desperate enough to anger their environmental-progressive base and threaten their ability to compete in 2016? It may come down to that question in the lame-duck Senate over the last few days of the Democratic majority. The Washington Post reports that Harry Reid and his caucus may try rescuing Mary Landrieu by passing an approval of the Keystone XL pipeline project, a key policy goal for Republicans and a big economic issue in Louisiana:

Senate Democrats are working on plans to hold a vote authorizing construction of the Keystone XL pipeline — approval that Democrats believe might bolster the chances of Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.), who faces a tough runoff election next month.

Such a move would also draw howls from the environmental movement who had hoped that President Obama would resolve a years-long dispute over a long-awaited energy project in their favor.

Several Senate Democratic aides confirmed on Tuesday evening that talks are underway to allow for a vote authorizing construction of the pipeline in the coming days. The aides, who were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter, said that details on language of the bill authorizing and its timing were not yet settled, but likely would be among the topics of conversation as Congress reconvenes Wednesday.

Landrieu is expected to make a formal announcement of plans to hold a vote later Tuesday or on Wednesday, the aides said.

Could we rename it from the Keystone Pipeline to the Landrieu Pipes? Then vote her out in December? But remember her for decades to come....as the remarkable Democrat who found her courage at the bitter end?

Yeah, “Hey, vote for us, we did the right thing, the thing we hate, 5 years after we could have done it. Don’t vote for the party that would have done it on day one!”

They can approve it today and then tie it up in the courts after the election.

They’ve done that several times already. I think Obama announced twice his approval of off-shore drilling. Then the regulators undo what he just did. Its a sleight of hand that works every time. He gets credit for approving it and for un-approving it.

Looks like Cassidy is already helping Louisiana and he’s not even elected yet.

Ah.. the sudden Keystone Pipeline epiphany of the democrats. Amazing how “flexible” they can be when they’re on political life support.

Won’t work. As if that issue is the reason she’s losing.

Wouldn’t that require Obama to actually sign it too? Not gonna happen.

RE: Won’t work. As if that issue is the reason she’s losing.

It isn’t Keystone, it’s about what is now and forever known as the second LOUISIANA PURCHASE.... her voting for Obamacare in exchange for kickbacks.

Republicans in the House should create one bill that approves the pipeline and repeals Obamacare.

Go ahead and vote on this, Landrieu.

A blessing in disguse ?
Let the dems take this up in false hopes to save Mary “ baby fat “ Senate seat and anger their base and the environmentlists ( the people are watching ) , therefore in 2016 their base and the environmentalist wackos will stay home once again.

The only vote the Bolshies can take that may save Little Mary Traitor is impeachment of Obumer.

The conviction of Obama. Landrieu would play no part in the impeachment.

Your right, he won’t sign it, but ? Any of the Democrats running for president can’t clam they created jobs and helped the ecomony to say they helped the economy when it was Obola that vetoed it.
All the Republicans have to do is have TV political commercials him vetoing the Keystone project.

Their master Tom Steyer may not allow this as he benefits from Keystone being blocked.

It could pass the Senate and House and still come up short in the WH. It will just place Landrieu on the record supporting it. The interesting question will be how many Dems will support it.

I have a different perspective. I want to see the Keystone Pipeline vote under the new Senate and have an “in your face” message sent to the Big Zero. I want him to veto the bill, then I want the House and the Senate to override the veto.

I think that both the Senate and the House can and will override a veto on Keystone as those Democrats running for office in 2016 will have taken the lesson of the 2014 elections to heart and want to be seen as pro-jobs, pro-economy or fear defeat. It would also be wise for Senate Democrats running for reelection in 2016 to distance themselves from Obama as much as possible and this would be a good start for them to say they were not in lock step with the Big Zero.
