Video: New York State Officer Appears to Slap Man Who Didn’t Want Car Searched

In what appears to be yet another example of how police officers can get aggressive if they don’t realize there’s a camera on them, an upstate New York sheriff’s deputy was suspended without pay after a video went viral that appears to show him slapping a young man. A Saratoga County sheriff’s sergeant is seen quickly losing patience with Colin Fitch, who did not want his car searched. It was all caught on camera by a friend, Adam Roberts, according to Photography is Not a Crime. The 48-year-old Sgt. Shawn R. Glans, who has been a police officer for 27 years, was apparently suspicious of the two men when he saw a .22-caliber rifle on the back seat of a car.

Looks like the cop may have gone overboard here.

Another bully cop who needs to be slapped down. If he had asked me if I wanted him to get a search warrant, the answer is am emphatic YES.

Don’t see any blog posts over on the paper’s site: http://www.timesunion.com/

Sheriff and DA to make commetns at 2pm.

Can’t explain this officer’s alleged actions, but it doesn’t look good for him.

The other kid should be glad Officer Puff-N-Stuff didn’t see him with a cell phone filming everything. We should know this is going on. There is a time for officers to act tough and unyielding, but this was not one of those times. He should be glad it was this young man, and not some angry minority with nothing left to lose, like, a Michael Brown type for instance.

Wonder how he missed that? He would have really freaked out. Granted the kids were sassy, but they didn't commit any crimes so you can't slap them around. Officer might lose his job over this.

” Granted the kids

They were sassy probably because the cops were complete jerks and criminals.

Not just the slap. Abusive language not acceptable. A little professionalism.

Professionalism is no longer a concept cops get. They’vr been excusing and ignoring bad attitudes and foul behavior for so long, most don’t even realize how poorly they behave.

Remember, there were two cops in this. They give only lip service to respecting the public.

Typical of every encounter I’ve had with cops when they thought there wasn’t a camera

Totally overboard. Should be charge with assault under color of law, whatever that is called in that state. As far as the legality of the search, the officer would be a real stretch under the mobile conveyance exception. Sight of the gun in the back seat might fit under the draconian guns laws up there, but......slapping a citizen should equal fired, and prosecuted.

Granted the kids were sassy

Asserting your Constitutional rights is not sassiness, it's a civic responsibility. Make the fat prick get a search warrant.

There was a second cop at the scene for all of this. Why is he not on un-paid leave as well. He stood by and watched the violation of these kids and did nothing, then failed to report it. I wonder if he is one of the “good cops” I am assurred outnumber the bad.

I know former police officers who tell me part of the problem is young officers coming up are taught very little about the fundamentals of the constitution.

Losing his job won’t be enough. A conviction and time in prison might.

I know this isn’t really related, but it has been sticking in my craw for a couple of days.

I just happened to stumble on a show called “Weed Country” on Discovery. It is about the “blue triangle” in Northern Cali. Seems the weed business is growing by leaps and bounds there and this “reality show” is a depiction of the weed growers/sellers vs the government law enforcement folks.

Now, what has been bothering me is the law enforcement side of the show. They truly are a military troop. They dress in full military garb, complete with unit patches. They fly into the wilderness areas will hanging from ropes on helicopters. They have military trained dogs hanging on the ropes with them. Then the actually march into the woods on a recon mission.

It is amazing in the militarization of it all. So, what is the result? Well, they have cut down a lot of plants this season, but no arrests have been made. That seems like a lot of militarization for very little results. On top of that, their attitude is amazing! On stated, “I’ve been doing this for 25 years and the adraniline is worth it every time!”

These guys aren’t busting through locked doors of crack houses either. They are actively WANTING to be a military unit...

On the other side of the law is a dispensery owner. He had his dispensery raided by the feds and it was shut down and everything in it was confiscated. All of his assets were siezed, to include his bank accounts and such. They even served him with a seizure notice on one of the shows for a rental property that he had in Virginia! IN VIRGINIA!

Admittedly, I am not a fan of the War on Drugs, but I am not an advocate for a pot culture. That said, the visual dicotomy is amazing on this show. It is subtle, but being a FReeper I can see it...

If I have to chose between the militarized police on that show and allowing people to be free (and responsible for their lives) to participate in that industry, well I think I would side with the dopers on this one...

OK, sorry to derail your thread.

Sassy?

These young MEN exercised their rights under the 1st Amendment, 2nd Amendment and 4th Amendment in under a minute. They have lived up to the standard of free Americans as citizens, even if it cost them some bit of sass and a slap in the face.

Standing for our hard won RIGHTS under our Constitution isn’t “sassy,” it’s a citizen’s duty to every soldier, sailor, Marine and airman who sacrificed to provide them.
