The residents of Belle Harbor Manor spent four miserable months in emergency shelters after Superstorm Sandy's floodwaters surged through their assisted-living center on New York City's Rockaway peninsula.
Now, the home's disabled, elderly and mostly poor residents have a new headache: The Federal Emergency Management Agency has asked at least a dozen of them to pay back thousands of dollars in disaster aid.
(snip)
osenberg said the FEMA workers who urged him to apply for assistance during the period when residents were staying at the armory never explained that the money could only be used for housing.
"Everyone asked, 'Do we have to pay this back later on? Is it a loan?' They said, 'No. It's a gift from Obama,'" he said. "If I wasn't eligible, then why give it to me in the first place? They knew we were living in an adult home. They knew our shelter was being paid for by the state. It's not like we lied on the application."
At the time, it wasn't clear how long they would be in the shelter, or where they would go next.

Where’s the MSM’s “war on the elderly/disabled” mantra? Oh, its Democrats running the show—never mind. It’s only a reflection of love the feds are displaying then.
Gotta have the money to pay for illegal aliens’ housing and food stamps.
slight add:
Obama giveth,(before election) and Obama taketh away, (after election).
Let them keep it. These folks are at least as worthy as the illegals feeding off the taxpayers and have probably paid into the system at some point.
The administration has shoveled billions in foreign aid to the debacle in the ME and wasted trillions shoring up the banks. Surely the pittance given to restore the citizens who suffered such loses can be forgiven.
But when New Yorkers hate republicans, they’ll take this crap from Bammy and like it.
They might mention that some three and four generation welfare families chip in, or some illegal bene collector help out...but that’s as far as it will go.
Tell ‘em to get if from their uncle Sol. That’s Uncle Solyndra.
There’s really nothing more despicable on the planet than the MSM. Spineless boot-lickers.
No. These people fit neatly into the most preyed upon/ the most easily taken-advantage-of, along with veterans.
A lot of talk, but the benefits collectors are the gays, suing bakery owners, illegals, with all of their demands and protections and funding, and the Chamber of Commerce.
Sick
the fact that zer0 cherry picks the neighborhoods that get the aid, by class and race, is a given. I am still against giving people Federally guaranteed flood insurance for people who decide to have their home and their vacation home on the barrier beaches or even waterfront houses in the ‘protected’ bays.
when I was single in 1979 I rented a house on a canal on the south shore of Long Island and kept my boat tied up in the backyard canal. When I got married a year later, the last place I looked for a home to buy was on the water. every 10 years is a small to medium hurricane or nor’easter ‘situation’ that will require at least minor structural repair of your home. once every 50 years or so comes the big one. Your house needs to be gutted at best or bulldozed at worst and I see no reason for my tax dollars be used to pay for this.
you want to live on the ocean so you can play.....you should be able to afford to rebuild. (folks who farm in flood planes are another thing.....this is where the best farmland generally is and I can see making insurance available for these folks.)
Back in 1976, the apartment we rented on MINGO street and Admiral in Tulsa, OK got flooded in the Memorial Day flood.
We got a federal disaster loan and had to pay back every penny with interest. We did. It took eight years but we did it.
Well done!
Government employees have a quota and get bonuses for taxpayer largess they “spread around.”
My wife inherited a nice beach house in Galveston that was badly damaged. We went to look at it, everything was covered by private insurance/we didn’t live there full time. (We rent it out most of the season, in fact.)
Anyway, a government idiot shows up, asks us questions. We decline aid. Refuse to sign anything. We get checks anyway. I can read and know we would be in trouble if we took the money.
Large hassle to refuse to pay and return. Lawyer brother-in-law was smart enough to copy the check and prove we returned the checks via FedEx.
Still turn up and basically got accused of fraud because the person filling out the form (and apparently signing my wife’s name) lied. They wanted like $40 interest on the check, plus a small fine, as if we had deposited it and returned it.
Sandy was devastating. The assisted living homes are not luxury dwellings. In fact, Bellevue hospital was also flooded along with the entire neighborhood.
They should keep the money.
My relatives are still dealing with the after effects and the petty bureaucracy the handles claims. -And they pay taxes hugely.
Oh, he’s going to punish his own for not reelecting all dems. The pain is only beginning. He’s a vengeful, petty male (not a man because a man doesn’t act like he does).
Now that the election is over .. ..
They knew we were living in an adult home. They knew our shelter was being paid for by the state. It’s not like we lied on the application.”
The last place they should build assisted living homes for the elderly or homes for anyone who can’t afford to have them replaced is a barrier beach.
