A conventional wisdom bubbled up among media people like myself about the tenor of Republican Dan Patricks message on immigration. We concluded that his hard-edged border security focus in his campaign for lieutenant governor was going to stampede Hispanic voters into the waiting arms of Democratic statewides.
Wrong. Or at least partially wrong.
Patrick trailed Leticia Van de Putte among Hispanic voters by only 52-46, according to NBCs exit polling on the race. I said only, because the 40 percentage range among Hispanics was once a mark of distinction for statewide Republicans. When George W. Bush reached 40 percent among Hispanics in balloting for governor, it was heralded as a breakthrough. Patrick was well into the 40s despite his so-called anti-immigrant rhetoric and calls for, among other things, repeal of in-state college tuition for Texas high school grads who are in the country illegally.
Heres the big surprise for me: Patrick thumped Van de Putte among Hispanic men, 53-46. These voters clearly didnt find Patricks tough immigration stance offensive.
One possible explanation is that Patrick had a lower-key fall race, letting the toughest talk from the primary fight mostly fade into memory. He didnt do much to stoke those embers, but he didnt run from his positions, either, such as during the one televised debate in the contest and in his TV ads that stressed border security.

Amen! Many Texas Hispanics I know are proud to be Texan and American.
Hispanics lived in this area LONG before Texas became a State.

That’s what many people don’t know about Texas. These people were called Texans, Texicans, and other names but they were here since the days before Texas independence.
When my ancestors came to Texas from Tennessee these people were LONG established and had lived under Spanish, French, and Mexican tyranny. My people were the immigrants. When Texas fought and won its independence from Mexico they were among the first citizens of the Republic of Texas.
No, the illegals aliens are never going to turn Texas blue enough to reunite us with Mexico. True Texans are proud of their state and its history. We are also proud Americans. But Texas is a nation state and many believe we could survive on our own again if that became necessary to maintain our independence and way of life.
Again, thanks for your input and G_D bless Texas!

I’m sure Cecilia Abbott, wife of governor Greg Abbott, is proud of her heritage. As a fellow Texan, I am proud to welcome her as our first lady of Texas.
As Battleground Texas found to their dismay, Texans are a breed of many ethnicities who for the most part work well together and respect the heritage of one another. We intermarry and the breed continues to improve.
Heck, if Battleground Texas, Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton and other liberal agitators weren’t around to constantly remind us we’re all “whiteys” enjoying our “white privilege” over the unfortunate few, we wouldn’t even bother to notice our diversities.
I still think most Texans are proud of their heritage and traditions that have made Texas the greatest state of the greatest nation on earth.
G_D bless Texas!
G_D bless Texas! Thanks for the upbeat confirmation ... you made my day.
We have close to a 2/3rds majority in both the House and Senate. We could pass legislation that takes away the authority to investigate state officials from the Austin DA's office to the Texas Attorney General. If it requires a constitutional amendment, it wouldn't take very many Democrats to pass such and amendment.
