George H.W. Bush seriously considered not running for re-election in 1992 even though he loved his job, according to a new book written by former President George W. Bush.

A complimentary account of his dad’s presidency and glimpse into his personal life, “41: A Portrait of my Father,” is scheduled to hit shelves on Tuesday, when the two will make a rare joint appearance at the elder Bush’s presidential library in College Station, Texas. […]

George H.W. Bush, now 90, pondered not running for a second term because he felt his role was creating undue scrutiny of his son, Neil Bush, who was facing a federal lawsuit, according to the book. …

He sure acted like he didn’t want to win

That target-rich opponent and all he did was rope-a-dope it

Yes, W, we know. It was during a debate. He was looking at his wristwatch, having other, better things to do. Gave it to his BFF Clinton

Toward the end of his first term, I thought Bush didn’t really want to be president any longer. It came to me in a flash while watching him on TV…forget the context of the moment, but it was very clear.

Woman’s intuition and maybe a little political savvy too. I look forward to reading W’s new book.

The Richmond debate. When he looked at his watch.

Be honest, the next republican nominee should only commit to one term and get things he wants done as they won’t have to worry about reelecion... He/she could then run again later on 4 or 8 years later. Last 3 presidents with 2 terms have pretty much been a waste of time and killed their parties off midterm elections.

I remember nightly coverage of a summer of speed golfing and cigarette boat rides in Maine. The GOP-e, steeped in tradition, didn’t lift a finger until after Labor Day, if a finger was lifted at all. It was the year I began shouting at the TV.

GHWB didn’t even start campaigning until about 2 weeks before the election, when polls were showing the upstart competitor gain ground.

Shortly after his defeat, a reporter asked him why he waited so late to start campaigning. His reply — ‘he was the incumbent, so he thought he would win anyway over the relatively unknown Clinton.’

"He sure acted like he didn’t want to win"

That was sure my untutored political view of the debacle.

I just could not and still cannot believe this country would elect a known draft dodger. Events since then have drastically lowered my opinion of most of the people in this country beyond that.

Bush the Elder couldn’t even follow his own convictions and step aside to allow a stronger conservative candidate to emerge. He ended up dragging the rest of us along in lackluster fashion to a Clinton presidency. Thanks for nothing.

Right there with you! Bush 1, the Pansy Globalist that he is is …did not give two Poops about the State of the Country. he hated Ronnie and wished to smack down his legacy.

I abhor the Globalist Bush”s.

Was that the one where that hippy guy asked the “father of our country” question? I wouldn’t want to be that guy’s president, either.

Could have been. Nor was I thrilled when he threw up all over the prime minister of Japan…
