For the first time, the number of women in Congress has hit triple digits.

Alma Adams, a Democrat from North Carolina, was elected representative for the 12th Congressional District on Tuesday. Because it was a special election, she will be sworn in immediately and join the 113th Congress.

Before Adams’s election, there were 20 female senators and 79 female representatives in Congress, according to the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University.

State Rep. Alma Adams, who was elected this week to represent the 12th Congressional District in the US House of Representatives, is going to have to find a new schtick. Adams has always been known for her hats. She always wears one and it seems she always has on a different one.

No more. Hats have been banned on the floor of the House since 1837, and in the House the dress code is taken very seriously. Adams could try and get the rule changed, but it isn’t likely to happen. The House is going to have a huge Republican majority and Adams is a lifelong Democrat.

Maybe she could try wearing unusual shoes, or perhaps she could go to Washington, and instead being known for her hats, as she was in Raleigh, Adams could work at being known for the legislation she helps pass.

That would be a real change for her.

She got Mel Watt's minority-majority district after he got kicked upstairs (Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency).

She called Thom Tillis "Uncle Tom" (or is that "Uncle Thom"?) at a campaign rally.

Those of us in North Carolina who are relieved at Alma Adams' departure from the NC General Assembly are looking forward to our fellow Conservative's pending introduction to this interesting example of the plastic hat crowd. She's Sheila Jackson Lee 20 years older with maybe 20 extra IQ points and less (though more traditional) fashion sense.

She's a piece of work.

I’ve always wondered, we work towards a country where we are blind to race, religion gender, etc, but then we go ahead and add them up. doesn’t make sense to me.

Well, only a Democrat could be the one to break the barrier.

Certainly not a Republican.
And of course not a Black Republican.
And positively not a Conservative Black Republican.

Remember in grade school, painting macaroni with gold paint?
Then gluing the elbows, bowties, etc. to things?

That’s what I thought was on her hat.

Because it was a special election, she will be sworn in immediately and join the 113th Congress.
. . . thereby assuring that she will not be even close to being the 100th

I would expect that Beaner would play games with the timing of the swearing-in ceremony, if necessary, to assure that the 100th woman congressman will be a Republican. Assuming that the Democrats even have any freshman women in the 114th Congress.
