Pakistani man is hacked to death for alleged blasphemy against Islam A pregnant Christian woman and her husband were burned to death in a brick kiln by a Muslim to whom they owed money. On the night of November 6, Syed Tufail Haider (45) was arrested by the police in the Gujarat region of Pakistan over an argument that occurred in the central market in Gujrat City. Local police brought Tufail Haider to the police station in Gujrat City, where Assistant Sub Inspector Faraz Naveed interrogated him. During the interrogation, Naveed accused Tufail Haider of insulting the companions of Muhammad and chopped his neck several times and killed him. Police officials confirmed Tufail Haider`s death and that Naveed has been arrested. He will be tried for killing a prisoner. They contend that Tufail Haider was mentally deranged. The accusation of blasphemy, which is a crime under Pakistan’s Islamic system of justice, was not formally filed against the deceased.
In October, Mumtaz Qadri - the assassin of the late Punjab governor Salman Taseer - incited an anti-terror squad officer to attack a prisoner who was sentenced under the blasphemy law at the Adyala jail in Rawalpindi. Qadri attacked fellow prisoner Muhammad Asghar, who survived the attack.
Earlier this week, a Christian couple was attacked and thrown into a brick kiln in Kot Radha Krishan after being accused of blasphemy. The police report confirmed that the assault came as the result of a dispute between the Muslim kiln owner and the Christian couple. The Christian couple was unable to repay a loan of 500,000 Rupees (3,935 Euros) the kiln owner have given them. In retaliation, the Muslim man then falsely accused the couple of burning the Koran, and then burned the two Christians in the kiln he owns. The Christian couple had three children and was expecting another child.
There have been protests across Pakistan, in Lahore and Islamabad Life For All Pakistan and Masihi Foundation protested against the brutal attack. In a statement, the two human rights advocacy groups stated, " This is tragic, we are heading towards destruction, this insane behavior and intolerance will bear nothing else but destruction. It is time to act, giving mere compensations will not be enough, exemplary punishment is essential to ensure such barbaric incidents are not repeated in future. This has to stop, nothing will be left. We need to collectively stand against all kinds of injustice and intolerance. How long will the innocent suffer? The state has failed to protect the minorities, this is the reason for the growing extremism in the society." The prime minister of Pakistan has promised that those responsible for the murder of the Christian couple will be brought to book.
“Tufail was kept in the lock-up but he continued uttering derogatory remarks and hurled abuse at policemen. He looked like a malang (wandering preacher) and seemed mentally imbalanced,” duty officer Ali Raza told AFP. He added, “Assistant Sub-Inspector Faraz Naveed, 36, became very angry on hearing the derogatory remarks against the companions of the Prophet and he killed the detainee with an axe in the lock up.” Tufail Haider’s corpse has been sent to a local hospital for a postmortem, while the axe that Naveed used is being kept as evidence.
Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif has taken notice of Tufail Haider's murder and has ordered a further investigation of the incident.
According to Sander Hamson, in an email sent to Spero News, “Blasphemy is a hugely sensitive issue in the country, with even unproven allegations often prompting mob violence. Anyone convicted, or even just accused, of insulting Islam, risks a violent and bloody death at the hands of vigilantes.”
In yet another case that has stirred the consciences of people around the world, a Christian woman, Aasia Bibi, has been on death row since November 2010 after she was found guilty of making derogatory remarks about Muhammad (PBUH) during an argument with a Muslim woman. Despite appeals from Muslims and non-Muslims, Bibi’s fate has not yet been decided.
