During their campaign for U.S. Senate, incumbent Democrat Mark Begich and Republican challenger Dan Sullivan were all over the state.
But since the last votes were counted early Wednesday morning--and with tens of thousands of absentee and other outstanding votes set to be counted next week--both campaigns have gone quiet.

With Dan Sullivan head by some 8,000 votes and at most 50,000 votes left to be counted, Mark Begich would have to win around 60% of them to win the election. That seems unlikely.
IIRC, all these uncounted votes are from villages where Indians are predominate.
Are the election judges waiting for these ballots to be sent in for tabulation?
Look, I understand that Alaska is an enormous state - but there really needs to be a beter way of accumulating and holding these ballots in a more rapid and secure manner.
I hate to assume the worst - but I can easily picture Begich “winning” the Indian vote with something like 95% of the vote.
IOW, it’ll smell just like when John Thune lost to Tim Johnson in South Dakota’s Senate race back in 2002. Lots of voter fraud in the Indian reservations back then.
I thought that Begich was counting on that (based on some prior election); let’s hope not...
I don’t think it’ll be enough this time.
Also, Republicans won control of the Alaska state Senate.
If it was close, I think Begich would have a shot. But Sullivan’s lead is outside the margin of error.
That’s very difficult to overcome.

Unless Al Franken shows up with a trunk load of votes. Democrats are the sleaziest creatures on the planet. They’re not above stealing it right before our eyes.
I hope it isn’t enough; I just think that is the reason they aren’t calling the race.
I believe it is the reason they aren’t calling the race; I think the Dem did well in absentee/write-in ballots in the past.
I’m curious if Native Alaskans there vote like Native Americans do in NM. Most of them here voted Dem unless I’m very much mistaken. The areas where they are concentrated in the state when Dem.
As an Alaskan, I agree. Almost every place is accessibly by a plane of some sort. Pack up the votes the night of the election and fly them in for counting the next morning.
The system is antiquated and needs updating for sure.
I am also very fearful of fraud and corruption from the villages. Just having all this extra time leaves it ripe for wrongdoing.
There are votes from the bush in the unpopulated interior of the state and also from Inuit reservations in the far north.
Its takes awhile for the ballots to be tabulated. Most of Alaska is reachable only by boat and plane.
Depends on how many ballot boxes the Rats manage to “find”.

Both of them are probably exhausted. I would imagine it is not an easy thing to campaign especially for a good year. A good sleep for both is probably warranted. Good luck Sullivan.
If you listen closely you can hear the sounds of the old Chevy sixes starting up in order to bring their trunks full of "undiscovered" ballots to the eager democrat volunteer counters.
Indian vote? I thought the native Alaskans were called Eskimos?
There are about 40k absentee ballots to be counted with about 80 percent from strong R districts. All of the regular ballots from all districts have been reported and counted. There are also some question ballots. The counting of ballots will start again on the 11th and end no latter then the 19th. I do not see a path for a Begich win.
I wish everybody would read this. They are not ballots from far flung precincts, they are absentee ballots from all over the state. 100% of precincts have already been counted.
Comforting. Thx. We need this seat as a beachhead for 2016. Obviously Louisiana as well
