Find the incumbents on your ballot, then vote 'no'
Chicago Tribune ^ | November 4, 2014 | By Dennis Byrne

This is Election Day, and I'm proud to cast my vote against the assorted utopians, finaglers and totally self-involved who are running Illinois and America into the ground.

It's no coincidence that most of those who are getting the back of my hand are incumbents. And Democrats. I mean, look at what they've done, in Illinois and America. A potted plant could do better.

Not that some of the challengers are better than potted plants, but you can't blame them for a state and a federal government that are circling the drain. The Affordable Care Act, proudly marked by President Barack Obama as his legacy, stinks to high heaven, and the lid on this cesspool remains to be fully opened. The national debt threatens to turn America into a Depression-era dust storm. The economy slouches. Etc.

My guess is that Illinois will go bust first, only because it can't print its own money. Throw in Chicago, too. Illinois owes more than $100 billion to its public employee pension funds; raise taxes to the world's highest and that debt still won't be easily wiped out.

Furthermore: The worst credit rating among states. Citizens and businesses getting the hell out. Health care and other providers of state services getting stiffed.

Illinois and Chicago will sink underwater long before global warming's rising Atlantic will swamp Miami.

Obama was right when he said his policies are on the ballot, as well as the toadies who supported his policies. Chief among them is our own Sen. Dick Durbin, who, as Majority Leader Harry Reid's right-hand man, bears some heavy responsibility for congressional deadlock.

In reality, in this election anyway, it means voting for competence, workable policies, intellectual honesty, good government and the common good.

The house of representatives sent 322 bills to the senate. They all sit on Harry Reeds desk, he held every one up with no action per Obama’s instructions. the do nothing congress is owned by Obama alone.

“A potted plant could do better.”

I agree with your sentiment entirely. As a society we’ve made politicians into celebrities, and the media use words and phrases like ‘genius’, brilliant’, ‘smartest person in the room’ for those politicians they like. The reality that we need to come to grips with as a society is that the traits and talents of many successful politicians that have allowed them to attain and stay in office are traits and talents that have nothing to do with being good at what they’re elected to do.

The traits that help get people elected include the ability to obfuscate and avoid answering potentially damaging questions, being facile with propaganda, the ability and willingness to lie without being obvious about it, the willingness to defame and destroy others when politically advantageous to do so, and the willingness to cut deals irrespective of core principles (if they happen to have any). These are not the traits that make people great human beings or great leaders.

When I went to vote today, I counted the number of positions to be voted on, there were 18. Of those 18, only 7 had Democrat opponents. All the other positions were uncontested.

I specifically went to the voting location to vote against Jerry Knowles because he IS a democrat in sheep’s clothing. I voted for the other two Republicans and found at the bottom JERRY KNOWLES- REPUBLICAN and on the other side JERRY KNOWLES- DEMOCRAT. How (and why? ) can this happen?
