Gallup: Public support for stricter gun laws drops 11 points in less than two years

Emblematic of Obama’s entire second term, really. After the Sandy Hook shootings in December 2012, he made gun control his top policy priority to start his second term. Public support for action spiked in the emotional aftermath of the murders; the White House, mindful of Rahm Emanuel’s advice to never let a crisis go to waste, demanded that Congress act quickly to address gun violence, knowing that public opinion would soon revert to the pre-Newtown status quo as that emotion faded. Republicans stood firm for Second Amendment rights, though, arguing — correctly — that nothing proposed by Democrats would reduce mass shootings, which, contrary to popular belief, haven’t become more common over time. (Gun violence more broadly has declined sharply over the past 20 years.) After the Toomey/Manchin bill failed in the Senate, Obama gave up and moved on to other priorities, with Democrats vowing that the GOP would pay a price for their opposition at the polls in 2014.

polls show 594 passing comfortably at the moment, thanks to
scary and misleading TV ads linking “gun shows” to domestic violence offenders acquiring firearms and committing murders.

for sheer numbers of deaths caused, they should be more concerned about drivers texting, using laptops, etc.

Or looking at the 9” video dashboard display provided in many newer vehicles by the manufacturers. I guess looking at the map on your screen isn’t as distracting as talking on your cell phone.

Even before the age of electronic distractions, I remember seeing a woman driving in heavy fast moving 5 o’clock rush hour traffic reading a magazine propped up on her steering wheel....................

Women are feeling unsafe from Obama’s policies. In general violent crimes are way down...gun violence is down...but what’s up is the threat to families in the form of ISIS/AQ and growing homegrown threats. Gun grabbers have been throwing millions after millions to try and convince people a school shooting here or there is something that happens every day...and in reality way more children die in swimming pools than with a gun. Obama/Democrats goal to disarm and take away 2A from the people is out in the open, its a war on women that women are realizing disenfranchizes, revokes their power and ability to protect themselves. Democrats most certainly have shot themselves in the foot on gun control.

Can’t tell me that America’s three-year-long gun buying spree that only recently leveled off last year isn’t part of the decline in both the attitudes towards gun prohibition and the diminishment of violent crime.

Tom Gresham covered some of this in a point he made on last weekends ‘Gun Talk’ podcast where he challenged the notion made by gun control groups that there’s been a sharp decline in retail gun sales with the response that the actual pool of American gun owners is much larger than it was six years ago; therefore, a slower percentage of an increase in gun sales across a much larger sample of population than just a few years before in fact means more guns. Naturally, more new gun owners means a decrease in favor ability of gun control — who buys a gun and wants it confiscated? Okay, Mark Kelley for one, I guess but he’s an exception isn’t he?

Gun banners had responded two years ago to the BATFE figures showing a huge surge in gun sales that it was nothing more than existing gun owners stockpiling guns. That unfounded notion looks pretty dubious in the light of Gallup polling showing a likewise decline in favorability of gun control right after a surge in gun sales. Who is suddenly less in favor of gun control when they don’t own a gun? I can’t think of anyone.

It’s just anecdotal, but I’ve been approached by extended family members living in fairly restrictive areas for gun freedoms asking me about the process for acquiring their first gun. Frequent enough that I have to say it’s a trend at least in my personal circle.

obama will not go until he makes his mark on gun control. He won’t be able to do it legislatively, but he will EO something to take us back to the days of ammo shortages and sky high gun prices.

Bank on it.

A gun control referendum is on the ballot here in Crook County IL, the only one in the country. Aren’t we special?

It will pass but it’s a meaningless “advisory” thing urging the state legislature to take action and violate the US constitution.
