What Can Washington Get Done in Obama’s Last Two Years?
Politico.com ^ | 10/27/14 | Various

Posted on 10/28/2014 7:57:09 AM PDT by DoodleDawg

In the worst-case scenario, the next two years of the Obama administration could look as bad as, or worse than, the past two: a (most likely) Republican-controlled House and Senate at odds with the Democratic White House and a new low number of bills enacted into law. The West Wing is already brainstorming potential areas of agreement with new GOP allies on the Hill, and new House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy has promised an early emphasis on productivity.

But after four years of gridlock and confirmation fights, most Americans don’t appear to be getting their hopes up—congressional approval, as of earlier this month, was at a meager 14 percent. Which raises the question: Can Washington realistically get anything done before the next president is inaugurated? We asked a range of thinkers—from Congress and beyond, from both sides of the aisle and smack-dab in the middle of it—to tell us which bipartisan ideas really could make it into law before the Obama era ends.

Subtitled "Eleven Bipartisan Ideas That Might Actually Pass". I went down the list and figured that at least 9 were dead on arrival. Maybe two might do somewhere but I think that even those have a better than even chance of being filibustered by one side or the other.

You can add it to the list, which would bring it up to 10 ideas that won't go anywhere and still two that would probably be filibustered.

Supposedly, there are close to 200 bills which the House has already passed and which Harry Reid has refused to bring up for a vote. Even the turtle should be an improvement in that respect.

So I suppose it would be pointless to point out to the libs that support and defend odunga that our founding fathers actually intended for government to work exactly like this...I suppose it would also be pointless to point out that the congress and senate were actually more effective prior to the installation of air conditioning and they had to actually return home to face “we the people” during the hot summer months in DC...

Over 350.

There are always hundreds of bills passed by the House and waiting on Senate action at the end of every Congress. The current figure isn't particularly high or low.

That's probably what we'll get.

Yes would be pointless to mention any of that.

There is a liberal bias that Congress should be “productive” and pass legislation on various subjects.

I would be happy if Congress avoids passing legislation in many cases. Stopping bad legislation is a good function of Congress, not being “productive” by passing unneeded laws.

They can start CW-II, and that’s precisely what methinks will happen if they try and pull off any more Obamadork putrescence emitting ideas.

a new low number of bills enacted into law

Politico seems to think this is a bad thing.

“NOTHING” is a great option!

Doing nothing, generally speaking, is a superior option to the passage of any legislation that this President might deign to sign.

When a Republican Congress believes that its job is to create and pass legislation is when we get in trouble. We'd all be better off if they focused on a list, not of eleven measures they might pass, but eleven measures they might repeal.

Anything that passes will be a Republican initiative, and he will veto it.

He will continue to rule by decree and will continue to crow about it. The only thing Congress can do is cut off the money, and clearly they don’t have the stones to go anywhere near that.

All they can do is try and slow him down a bit and hope we have the chance for a major course correction in 2016.

Which we won’t if the GOPe thrusts Jeb Bush or Chris Christie on us.

The Republican House has passed at least 500 bills over the last four years, most that we would find pleasing, and they get over to the Senate and Harry Reid throws them in the dumper.

If the Senate is controlled by the Republicans, there is an excellent chance that complimentary bills would pass and then be sent to Obama for his signature.

At that point is no longer a do-nothing Congress but a bonafide do-nothing-lame-duck president.

The Republicans should then document EVERY TIME Obama stands in way of real reform and prepare for the next election.

Because we need more laws. More regulations, more executive orders.

Americans need to just be left the freak alone, to enjoy the fruit of their own labor, and to take a breath unnoticed by TPTB.
