Ebola In New York City: NYC Boy Being Tested For Virus After Returning From Guinea with symptoms
International Business Times ^ | 10/27/2014 | By Howard Koplowitz

A 5-year-old boy showing possible symptoms of Ebola was being checked at a New York City hospital for the virus, the New York Post reported Monday. The boy, who was vomiting and had a fever, returned over the weekend from Guinea, one of the West African countries where Ebola has killed thousands of people since earlier this year.

The boy had a 103-degree fever, a neighbor told the Post. They said EMS workers wearing hazmat suits carried the child from his home in the Bronx. “He looked weak,” the neighbor said. “He was really, really out of it.”

The 5-year-old’s family, who also returned from Guinea on Saturday night, were being quarantined inside their home. The boy is being watched at Bellevue Hospital, the same facility treating Dr. Craig Spencer, who was diagnosed with Ebola last week after treating virus patients in West Africa. Spencer is in serious but stable condition, according to WNYW.

The quarantine for the boy’s family was part of a plan instituted by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who held a joint news conference with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie after Spencer was diagnosed with Ebola. Cuomo is allowing asymptomatic family members to be quarantined in their homes. Christie followed suit, but he's forcing Kaci Hickox, a Maine nurse who treated Ebola patients in West Africa, to be under quarantine at a New Jersey hospital.

Hickox, who isn’t displaying any Ebola symptoms, slammed Christie’s order and is filing a lawsuit against the quarantine. “If he knew anything about Ebola he would know that asymptomatic people are not infectious,” she told CNN.

The governors’ quarantine plans were criticized by an unnamed Obama administration official who told the New York Times that the protocols weren’t rooted in science.

Don’t worry.

Dem. Gov. Cuomo is quarantining returnees from Ebola stricken countries.

Ooops! Only the white ones....

Who the hell is taking their 5 year old to Guinea during an Ebola outbreak? Can someone say “child abuse”?

Hopefully, just has a flu.

The good news is that both NYC cases (if this kid tests positive) didn’t pick it up in NY, but rather in that basket case of a continent, Africa.

““If he knew anything about Ebola he would know that asymptomatic people are not infectious,” she told CNN.”

Tell that to the airlines that have lost millions.

Tell that to Carnival Cruise Lines which lost millions.

Tell that to the guy who had to shut down his bowling alley.

This nurse is just too much. What is wrong with erring on the side of caution and having her undergo the quarantine? Worst case she loses three weeks of her time and is hopefully ebola-free, and more importantly can't spread the disease (if indeed the 21-day incubation period is correct, with all the lousy information we're getting I'm not so sure that our virologists and epidemiologists really have that nailed donw yet).

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

“Over the weekend” could only refer to Saturday or Sunday (yesterday or the day before).

So the boy either became very symptomatically sick within a day of spending hours and hours on planes and in airports with others—or he was already sick and any temperature he may have had was tamped down with Tylenol or whatever.

I would take extreme caution against saying “not infectious” and rather say not infectious. Blood borne illnesses are contagious even when a person is asymptomatic, including HIV, Hepatitis, and others.

Ebola spread through sex when soldiers and a prostitute were asymptomatic. Given the possibility of someone having sexual contact with others over the days of time in which they take to start showing symptoms or even develop a fever, it technically is possible, though not through as many channels as if they were symptomatic.

If you are in quarantine or had a medical emergency, give notice to your supervisor at work, chances are that they will understand your circumstances. There’s communication for such circumstances.

I understand Cuomo got a call from King Obola, so he's backed off to a safer political position of "home quarantines", which basically means nothing at all.

Worst case she loses three weeks of her time

She doesn't even lose that. She works for the CDC and still gets paid. The only thing she loses is a little personal freedom to cruise bars, bed strangers, and attend leftist demonstrations.

Heard some reporting that he did the complete Ebola tour. Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nigeria. Nuts.

So much for our airport screening. “Over the weekend was the last 24 to 48 hours!

“Ebola spread through sex when soldiers and a prostitute were asymptomatic”

I cannot find a good reason for why it does not transmit till a person is showing symptoms. Perhaps we don’t know?

Interesting that they say the semen and breast milk can transmit the disease even after the victim has recovered.

“Dem. Gov. Cuomo is quarantining returnees from Ebola stricken countries.”

Nope, he folded. Home “quarantine” with full contact by families. Brilliant.

Politics is more important.
