Politics: As children across America tweet photos of their meager school lunches, Gitmo detainees are fattening up and illegal aliens are getting second helpings. How our government sets priorities is just amazing.
'Our greatest assets are our children," President Obama said last month as he signed something called "America's Promise Summit Declaration" that pledged in part to keep children "healthy."
But healthy's hardly the word that comes to mind when you read all the "#thanksObama" commentary on Twitter and other social media by disgusted kids posting photos of their government-issued victuals.
In a bid to meet the rigid regulations of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, with its one-size-fits-all calorie counts, children are finding their meals the sorriest, measliest and most unappetizing ever served.
It's shocking to see what now passes for meals in school cafeterias under the guise of "healthy": a couple slices of cheese, some florets of cauliflower, salads "naked" without dressing and assorted mystery meats. One kid even posted a photo of maggots in his green beans.
That, not surprisingly, is why large amounts of food are going straight to the trash and school districts are dropping out of the federal lunch program at a cost of foregoing federal funding.
The National School Boards Association last week reported that 84% of districts reported an increase in "plate waste" based on the new meals championed by first lady Michelle Obama.
Failure of this scope and on the sort of thing children will remember all their lives is not only a government scandal. It also stands in stark contrast to the cosseted coddling the government offers its favorite special-interest groups.

A great example of big government (Barack and Michelle) out of control catering to criminals and our enemies while causing school budgets to waste big dollars in wasted food.

So... does this mean the law affects only federally-subsidized meals? And now kids don't like those meals, so the schools are pulling out of federal lunch programs?
Maybe we all should be supporting the "Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act." ;-)
Prison inmates are better fed than school kids.
Not only that as America’s kids starve on Government lunches, so do their grandmothers on Social Security, whose medical benefits were slashed even closer to the marrow as illegals get preferential medical care.
That’s a Quaker School, correct?
No one likes Moochelle’s “healthy” menu.
She dumped classic comfort food in favor of salads and rice.
Kids find it sheer torture.
Just wondering: Does the law affect students who buy their own lunches at school or bring their own lunches? Or does it affect only the ones in the federal meal program?
Only the federal lunch program subsidizes so called “healthy” meals but I wouldn’t feed the stuff to my dog.
Why I would offer it to my child?
I don’t know the relevant law in detail, but several previous articles have said some schools are quitting the program and foregoing federal funds because they are losing so much money because of all the paying students who’ve started bringing their own lunch, leaving campus to eat, etc.
I don’t know what happens concerning the free lunch students when a school quits Michelle’s dictated menus and no longer receives federal funds.
So then the students who buy their own lunches or bring their lunches aren’t affected by the law? (I hope not.)
Thanks for the explanation. My children always were homeschooled, so I’m not familiar with the way things work in public school these days.
The law has always affected the kids who buy their own lunches because the only lunches offered in the cafeterias are the same for those buying them and those getting them "free."
Or does it affect only the ones in the federal meal program?
In the district where I live, even kids eligible for free or reduced lunches in the high school are bringing their own because the food in the cafeteria is that bad.
I do understand, however, the lunches in one particular HS was pretty pathetic even BEFORE Moochele got involved. My daughter has probably only bought lunch about 10 times since she started HS, and she is now a junior.
Feed prison inmates the Wookiees food and Crime will end
I grew up on the lunches my mother packed for me as I was eating the breakfast that she provided us.
Thanks, Mom.
