Where is the GOPs John Wayne when you need him? Not, apparently, in Texas. When Ebola-infected Thomas Duncan landed in Dallas, he instantly became a deadly international health threat to U.S. citizens and Americas frontline health workers. The Liberian national became the face here for a growing pandemic that has already killed thousands of Africans and is decimating the societal fabric and governmental institutions of three countries in West Africa.
Understandably, the mans diagnosis sparked a rash of panic throughout the country about a horrific, mysterious and incurable disease that Americans had only heard about from far away lands or in horror films.
That is, until Thomas Duncan arrived in Dallas.
Suddenly, anyone who had been to the hospital that turned Duncan away became worried. Everybody who had flown through Dallas/Fort Worth Airport became concerned. Soon, anybody flying anywhere got nervous. Distrust and fear bred further distrust and fear.
It was one of those moments where true leadership shines.
Someone who understands the fears and distrust steps forward, analyzes the problem coherently and reaches swift, sensible solutions. That leader makes sure the threat is taken seriously, all precautions are made and the public is protected.

He was hired to protect Texans and has the authority to have state officers screen all entries into this state.
I dare the feds to try to stop him. A 100k armed citizens would back up their officers.
RIGHT you are!
Everything is SO messed up .... we are past words by now!
I think Perry has done well.
He has now positioned himself for Texas becoming a leader in the field, by proposing a couple Texan specialist facilities, and so far the episode in Texas appears to be going away.
He did well. Score one for Perry. (I believe)
Does Perry envisage a forced vaccine, .... again?
He did okay. He didn’t shine. He could have and that is the point of the article.
Perry (could be) one of the good guys.
It is not clear yet whether he will rise to the occasion this time around, but he’s got potential.
That was my point is all. I’m not sure whether he’s the guy from Texas. Cruz might be far superior, but Perry has potential. That is all I was saying.
I like this perspective:
Literally, the federal government has more stringent protections for dogs traveling into the country than they have for humans. Good luck getting a dog remotely suspected of rabies or screwworm past all the vets and quarantines and paperwork into the USA. But a human carrying the Ebola virus from Liberia, come right on in!Looks like we've dumbed ourselves down to just past sustainable and now seem to be just hanging out waiting for reality to catch up.
I'm glad the Master Programmer has built in a lot of Grace for us in this matrix or we'd be close to extinction by now.
We're going through it like a keg of beer at a frat party.
Don’t get me wrong. I like Perry. One of the things that I like best about him is that he can be made to listen to reason. We had to smack him upside the head on Gardasil, TTC, and another couple issues, but we got him to back off. I don’t like that he still supports in-state tuition, but I think we can move him as we’ve done before. We’ll see.
Cruz is awesome.
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
Well, yes, perhaps he could have done as C. Hurt feels should have been done. However, I think some of Hurt’s suggestions about the possible actions were fanciful and near impossible - one being “forcing the issue with Obama.”
When has this EVER worked for a Republican? He operates as if they don’t exist! Likewise, any enforced travel ban on incoming pax from Liberia, wherever would have to be privy to that information which is controlled by Obama, frankly. We’ve all already seen where Obama hasn’t officially told any state officials where and when these illegal alien children have been dispersed.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m all about coulda, shoulda, woulda. I’m even all for blame and punishment. But the blame here isn’t Perry in my book. It is the Ebola President, his State Department, his CDC, his NIH, his DHS/TSA and all the others. If anything Perry would be dead last on that list IMO.
I think a Cruz/West ticket or perhaps a Cruz/Palin matchup would be great.
“He did well. Score one for Perry. (I believe)”
But Perry hired Mississippi’s henry barbour. Perry must believe he has some Conservative opposition he needs to debase, also henry is a tool of unca haley and his agenda which must be anything for money and they have represented Mexico to try to keep us from protecting our southern border and apparently have been sucessful. I believe haley also represents Liberia and Sierra Leone and now we’re fast tracking and increasing the number of immigrants from there instead of a travel ban.
Apparently this Methodist hospital has a whole floor that can be taken over, plus there is a separate wing in the emergency room that can be taken over.
What do all these doctors, nurses, and others do in the meantime, waiting for an ebola patient to show up?
WELL...
“Where is the GOPs John Wayne when you need him? Not, apparently, in Texas.”
Ted Cruz is still a Texan!
And he’s our political “John Wayne”!
I think that in your part of the country, Perry could be described as “all hat and not cattle”.
I think in that part of the country it
would be: ‘all hat and no cattle’.
Oops! I knew it was “no cattle”, but my dumb fingers had other ideas, apparently.
No big deal. I just thought it may be a regional difference
that I wasn’t used to.
Potential? I’m not sure anyone who said that Hillary Clinton was a: “Very, very capable public servant, a great Secretary of State, first Lady, very capable” has potential at anything. Yep, those are LaRaza Ricarrdo’s very own words.
:)
Not too much talk of cattle in my region; I live in Maryland. Now blue crabs and oysters....
