Gov. Rick Perry announced Tuesday that UT Southwestern Medical Center will head up one of two designated treatment centers for Ebola patients in Texas.
The goal of these facilities is to rival the most advanced facilities in the world, the governor said at a news conference at the Dallas hospital. I dont think there is a better institution in the world than UT Southwestern.
The states other treatment facility will be at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.
UT Southwestern will staff and provide other expertise for the treatment facility, but it wont be on the hospitals campus in Dallas Medical District. Instead it will be housed in a building at Methodist Health Systems continuing care facility at 401 Campbell Road in Richardson.

Honest question: how does one turn a medical facility into a top-rated Ebola treatment center overnight?
You “deem” it of course
The same way every auto manufacturer has a "Car of the Year" every year. Who does the ratings?
In Galveston? A major tourist town?
Yeah, nothing can go wrong with that decision...
“In Galveston? A major tourist town?”
An Island, very near two major entry points, and close to a large Metroplex. Easy to isolate and control entry. Or Escape attempts.
Or...You will have so many people coming and going that the disease could be spread far and wide before it is ever realized...
“Honest question: how does one turn a medical facility into a top-rated Ebola treatment center overnight?”
In Texas this can be done very easily. There is very little red tape which is why this couldn’t be done in a blue state.
You don’t. UTSW is nowhere on the map for this. UTMB has a Level 4 Biosafety lab so they at least know how to handle these things safely but a lab is not a treatment center. It takes years to build such a facility.
Galeston Island would be easy to quarantine in an emergency.
Galveston National Laboratory, National Biocontainment Facility Galveston, Texas. Opened in 2008, facility is operated by the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB).
Shope Laboratory Galveston, Texas. Operated by the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB).
Galveston is already one of four or five Level 4 biosafety facilities, in the country. So it makes sense.
What are they expecting? I thought the current outbreak was limited and winding down.
Interesting (not that I believe them).
That's what I thought...
Gal[v]eston Island would be easy to quarantine in an emergency.
Now that makes sense. It occurs to me, since I live outside of Tampa, that Tampa General Hospital sits on the corner of Davis Island, and would be easy to block off from Tampa proper for quarantine setup in a similar situation here. I would hope that such contingency planning has been thought of at the CDC, if not the FL Dept. of Health's Disease Control division.
Looks like this on the outside
"
And looks like this on the inside
Yuck. Enola ridden soylent green.
"Mmmmmmmmmmm, Ebola-Ridden Soylent Green."
If there must be an Ebola treatment facility in South Texas, I'm actually relieved it will be at UTMB Galveston. I have more than a passing interest since our home is on the water about 30 miles from UTMB and often down wind of the Biosafety Level 4 (BSL4) lab. :-)
They put a big facility on Galveston Island that researches super dangerous diseases. I guess they are accustomed to being careful and will do alright with Ebola patients - I hope better than the CDC.
I wouldn’t want to be a manager at the hospital there! The media and the Texas citizens will eat them alive if any mistake happens.
I think after hurricane Ike, Mexicans who came to make repairs, replaced the black ghetto population whose housing projects got washed away. I hope they understand what they are facing in risk by living there.
What this Obola thing has proven is that if it can go wrong it will.
An incurable disease seems rather curable in the US.
Seasoned healthcare workers who should have known better, are off galavanting around the world mere days after dealing with an Obola patient...Heaven forbid if someone is actually motivated to spread the disease...
