COMMENTARY: Health workers need optimal respiratory protection for Ebola
CIDRAP: Center for infectious disease and policy ^ | Sep 17, 2014 | Lisa M Brosseau, ScD, and Rachael Jones, PhD

We believe there is scientific and epidemiologic evidence that Ebola virus has the potential to be transmitted via infectious aerosol particles both near and at a distance from infected patients, which means that healthcare workers should be wearing respirators, not facemasks.1

The minimum level of protection in high-risk settings should be a respirator with an assigned protection factor greater than 10. A powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) with a hood or helmet offers many advantages over an N95 filtering facepiece or similar respirator, being more protective, comfortable, and cost-effective in the long run.

We strongly urge the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to seek funds for the purchase and transport of PAPRs to all healthcare workers currently fighting the battle against Ebola throughout Africa—and beyond.

There has been a lot of on-line and published controversy about whether Ebola virus can be transmitted via aerosols. Most scientific and medical personnel, along with public health organizations, have been unequivocal in their statements that Ebola can be transmitted only by direct contact with virus-laden fluids2,3 and that the only modes of transmission we should be concerned with are those termed "droplet" and "contact."

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

There is a rumor going around that an award winning comic from a 70s show was on that plane with Amber. He is a supporter of Obama and is doing self quarantine. If he was that popular it surely would have been in the news. You are hearing more about the strippers on the plane than this comedian.

If he was that well known, he wouldn't have been playing Cleveland.

But CDC Frieden says not following protocol is the problem. Let’s wait until the Ebola czar decides what is right. /sarc

TPTB have know about Ebola for how long and this latest outbreak for how long?

Health/life BUMP! Be prepared.

Sorry folks, but the CDC spent that money researching why lesbians tend to be overweight and on the struggles sexually confused individuals suffer through in Canada. A large chunk went to teach Africans how to put condoms on.

That’s far more important than protecting the lives of front line health care workers in the US.
