Baylor University is holding a forum Tuesday after a group of freshman named their intramural team “Ferguson PD,” something school officials now say staff should not have approved.

Elizabeth Palacios, dean of student development at Baylor, said the forum event is meant to raise awareness and sensitivity after the students named their football team in honor of the Ferguson, Missouri, police department, which has come under scrutiny for the Aug. 9 shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown by a police officer.

The team was ordered to change its name Thursday, the day after the mishap was discovered, and the students also have been sanctioned through the intramural department.

Palacios said Baylor also is reviewing training and procedures in the student life office to ensure that staff members more closely scrutinize team name applications.

“They just didn’t catch it, and we had several folks (review the application),” Palacios said, noting that the office reviews hundreds of applications. “We want to make sure that these are things they’re able to catch. I think a lot of times they are looking for certain types of names and innuendo, and they just missed it.”

The Ferguson case has continued to draw national interest, with activists and protesters questioning whether Brown, who was black, was racially profiled and if police used excessive force in the case....

In honor of "Pound 'em Down Brown" they should offer to change the team name to:

I guess I don’t understand the issue with naming the team, an IM team, after a police department. Even Ferguson, MO PD.

“Palacios said the students were not aware of the details of the Ferguson case and only looked up information after being contacted by the administration.”

Sounds like the short attention span generation (SAS) just picked a name they saw trending on Twitter and went with it.

“Grass-roots activists have relied on social media to organize peaceful protests, for example. But it also circulated images of rioters and police confronting or arresting protesters, creating the impression that violence had besieged the city.”

“peaceful protests” - like breaking into local stores and stealing everything not bolted down?

““There were a lot of students there, they told us, ‘Can you please tell us the specifics of the case because we don’t know what happened,’ ” Moody-Ramirez said. “We did have to take a step back because we went into it with the assumption that everyone knew what happened.”

Meaning, you thought everyone agreed with your view, that the officer is guilty (and cannot be proven innocent), and as such should be beaten, drawn and quartered?

I work in a university, and it amazes me how naive these supposedly “gifted” kids are in reality. I also find it crazy that as a parent of pre-teens, I’m now suddenly “a stupid idiot, and can’t be trusted” by my children. I suppose that’s the circle of life. Of course, if I had said that to my parents, I’d have been slapped by mom, or spanked with a belt by my dad... (Granny would have me pick my own switch from the pecan tree or willow tree out back.... needless to say, I didn’t talk back very much. Just accepted what they said and kept my thoughts to myself).

Colleges have a hard time deciding when something is offensive and when it is controversial.
