Real Clear Politics: GOP in position to take a big majority in Senate
Hotair ^ | 10/14/2014 | Noah Rothman

It’s just a snapshot in time but, with just three weeks to go before voters head to the polls to cast their ballots in the midterm elections, Republicans may be in the best position to take control of the Senate than at any point in the 2014 election cycle.

Republicans’ biggest obstacles to retaking control in the upper chamber emerged in early fall not in their ability to unseat incumbent Democrats, but in the party’s challenges in defending GOP senators or previously GOP-held open seats. That problem is starting to fade as Republican voters begin to “come home” to unpopular GOP candidates for the sake of the Senate majority.

The most embattled Republican benefiting from this phenomenon is Kansas Sen. Pat Roberts who trailed Democrat-turned-independent Greg Orman for weeks following a Kansas court’s decision to order Democratic Senate nominee Chad Taylor off the ballot. For the first time since mid-September, a series of polls have begun to show Roberts reclaiming the GOP vote. He is now tied with Orman in the RCP average of polls and, with the tie going to the incumbent, RCP now suggests the Kansas race again leans toward Roberts.

With no Republican-held seats now in danger of falling into Democratic hands, according to the RCP averages of polls, the GOP is poised to pick up eight seats in the Senate after November 4. According to the polling averages, Republican candidates are poised to win their respective races in Alaska, Montana, South Dakota, Iowa, Colorado, Arkansas, West Virginia, and Louisiana.

This will not just be a defeat for Reid, though that will be cause for celebration, but 21 standing committees, 4 special committees, and 4 joint committees will be chaired by Republicans, many as solidly conservative as you could want. These Senators will control much of the tempo, the debate, and the details of legislation. It will be significant.

I didn’t think Republicans could win on just not being Democrats. Then Obama brought us ebola to America. I think the Dems are going to get slaughtered. (I wish it was literally, but I’ll take figuratively).

If the GOP manages to keep their mouths shut, and doesn’t screw this up, the first thing I’m going to do is watch Morning Joe. I want to see Mika’s little communist brain turn to dust before my eyes!

That’s a huge swing. They’ve had it very close for weeks.

And while they still color NC blue, it appears to be tightening and trending red.

There could be a few surprises on either side.

Hell the R’s could go +11 if NC, VA and MI (those two with new scandals against Dems).

Of course the R’s could just as easily screw the pooch this week and only do +5 somehow.

Let's hope they are right about Kansas and South Dakota.

It would be nice if the anti-Obama wave would sweep the Republican candidates to victory in NH, VA, and NC as well.

I don't know if Scott Brown should be written off yet. He may not be reliably conservative but at least he would be a vote against Harry Reid for majority leader.

Reid not in control of the Senate...let us pray.

Let’s also hope that no key positions requiring Senate approval are put before the Senate prior to the Christmas recess. Maybe a big enough victory will allow the Republicans there now, plus some sensible Dems, to stop anything really radical from happening.

Of course, we can certainly expect many E.O.s in the next 2 years.

In a just world no DIMocRAT would win any election this time (all the way down to dogcatcher). It is obvious that they hate Free America, hate the Truth, hates Laws and hate you.

The sickening Obama love affair seems to be completely over. I wonder of some Dem senators in purple states who are slated for re-election in 2016 might not swerve and vote with the GOP on some borderline legislation?

“These Senators will control much of the tempo, the debate, and the details of legislation. It will be significant.”

In addition, GOP control of the Senate will give Ted Cruz a national platform to attack the fascist Obuma administration and assorted turncoats in the GOP. That alone is reason to cheer for Republican control of the Senate, regardless of all the RINO garbage that comes along with Senate control.

I debate some progressive types on politics once a month. I’m going to skip this month. I have no desire to motivate them to vote.

The problem is the GOPe is going to put back filibuster rules in place effectively empowering the democrats. There have been a few articles here on FR about it. The GOPe could literally turn this country around, isolate obama and HELP Americans (for a change). But alas, I don't see it happening; too many DC cocktail parties to be invited to.

I hope Ted Cruz drags 'em kicking and screaming across the finish line and keeps them in check.

Two thirds. I think the last person they successfully impeached was a corrupt federal judge for a district in Florida back during the Reagan Administration.

He is now a sitting congressman. Guess which party?

With the recent revelations in VA that state may be in play as well.

They've already said as much too. It would not surprise me to see a few "republicans" turn democrat ala Specter after Nov. DC is so disconnected at this point it seems they our rep's and senators only get back home when it's time for re-election.
