Young defence cadets warned not to wear uniforms in public amid terrorism fears

MELBOURNE schools are instructing defence cadets as young as 13 not to wear their uniforms in public amid fears of terrorism.

The advice follows a Defence Department alert advising Army, Navy and Air Force cadets nationwide to exercise caution about where and when they wear uniforms.

More than 3000 students take part in the Army program in Victoria.

Ivanhoe Grammar School’s cadet unit commanding officer has told parents the 450 cadets shouldn’t wear the uniform on public transport or while walking to school, but to instead bring it in a bag and change later in the day.

Acting principal Gerard Foley said the precaution was the school’s call, prompted by the heightened security alert.

Some parents had asked whether safety precautions were necessary following a report, later discredited, of an attack on an Australian Defence Force officer wearing uniform in Sydney.

KEYWORDS:
The cadets being discussed in this article are high school aged students (aged 12 1/2 -19). It could be considered fairly similar to JROTC programs in the United States.

In Australia, school units tend to exist in 'elite' schools - the most expensive private schools, or old and highly successful government schools. There are also units associated with Defence Force bases (both regulars and reserves) which are open more generally. Where schools have cadet units, it has long been general practice for students to travel to and from school in cadet uniform rather than school uniform on days when they have parade and training.

burka is fine, however. Sheesh. Will they have to hide their flags, too. My Gadsden will be the last one flying if that PC nonsense makes its way to my neck of the woods.

American military personnel have been told not to wear their uniforms in various countries ... but not in our own, that I know of.

I understand their not wanting to put young teens at risk, but surely someone recognizes that this indicates a severe societal pathology that needs to be addressed by adults.

FWIW, Virginia Military Institute cadets as young as 12 fought at the Battle of New Market.

Not a single word about precisely what sort of terrorism threat they are concerned about.

Pretty much unnecessary as everybody knows it. We’ve already had one attack in Melbourne only a couple of weeks ago.

Yes, sometimes the media don’t mention such things out of political correctness, but in this case, it just doesn’t need to be stated.

We’ve already had one attack in Melbourne only a couple of weeks ago.

Such attacks could be carried out by crazed, anti-military leftists such as we had in the US during the '60s. And someone in the US seeeing such a story from Australia might wonder if there are any sort of anti-government and anti-military leftist elements there.

Or we might just assume the threat comes from Muslims who oppose any help Austrailia provides in the Middle East, or just Muslims striking a blow against the infidels.

There’s been a few causalities I’m afraid. It seems that when the Marines go out drinking with their Australian counterparts there tend to be more than a few epic hangovers the next day.

Mind you, our guys are suffering too. You tend to get a whole “our-country-can-drink-your-country-under-the-table” whenever you get American and Australian servicemen together.

Other than that, there is excellent training going on. The Australian Army and the USMC have a lot in common (tactics, mindset, strategy, etc...).

Screw that. Issue them sidearms. All of them, right down to the 13 year olds.

I trained with some of your Diggers back in the day. Fine fighting men all of them. And truth be told your boys won our particular drinking event.
