Apr 10, 2013 (CIDRAP News) – The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) takes a hit of about $270 million in the Obama administration's proposed fiscal year 2014 budget, including significant cuts to biodefense and emergency preparedness programs, officials revealed today.

CDC Director Tom Frieden, MD, speaking at a Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) press conference, said the "overall program budget would come down by about $270 million" under the budget proposal, compared with spending in fiscal year 2012.

It’s always a question of “Timing, Timing, Timing” and “Location, Location, Location”.

Obama’s worst nightmare is a CDC that fails. Looks like not only is he getting his wish, he’s going to make sure that he gets his wish.

Handing the Republicans a great October Surprise campaign issue. Wonder if the GOP is smart enough to seize and run with it? Questionable with Boneless Boehner and Turkey Neck Mitchell in charge.

So... looks like they won’t have the funds necessary to address this whole Ebola thing.

Oh, well - we have Obama’s word that it won’t be a problem.

Good. Name one disease the CDC has prevented. Name one patient the CDC cured. The CDC is nothing but another unnecessary bloated bureaucracy that only exists for the purpose of furthering its own existence.

Who do you think figures out whenever there is a multi-state food poisoning incident and puts a stop to it? Who do you think collects disease data and figures out there is a problem, such as the current EV68 outbreak spreading across several states? Who do you think comes and does the epidemiological investigation for unusual diseases and tracks down where the diseases originate so they can be stopped at their sources?

The CDC plays a crucial role in public health. Without it acting as a central clearing house for disease data, many outbreaks would never be noticed, and countless people would die.

Try reading the MMWR every week, like I do. Maybe then you will learn a little something about the function of the CDC.

Of course. It is much better to spend all available tax revenues and then some creating a permanent dependent class to ensure Democrat voting blocs, than it is to actually do something to protect public health. Who cares if people die, as long as they keep voting Democrat?

Shut down all of the federal pork to local governments to allow a little more for the CDC. There’s no tourism anyway.

How did we eradicate polio, small pox and tuberculosis with the CDC.

Indeed, if the CDC was around in the early 20th century, those diseases would've wiped out the US population by now.

When it comes to Ebola and enterovirus, the CDC has done nothing, absofreakinglylutely nothing to contain those diseases.

All the CDC has done is provide covering fire for Preezy Obola and its own ineptitude.

You'll forgive me if I don't bow down and worship the god known as The CDC.

Actually, we didn't. The CDC was founded in 1946, and its first mission was to eradicate malaria. It was instrumental in eradicating polio and smallpox, and it continues to fight diseases to this day.

If there is an outbreak of a dangerous disease anywhere in the US, the CDC sends an epidemiology team right away to investigate. The CDC is uniquely positioned to respond to multi-state outbreaks that otherwise would never be discovered. The CDC identified Legionnaire's disease. And so on.

A blog, in which the blogger takes things out of context in order to make points, is a valid example of anything?

All the evidence that I have seen suggests that Dr. Friedan is communicating regularly with the researchers who study Ebola, and medical personnel who have experience treating it.

BTW, the CDC has issued travel warnings about going to the affected countries. If you want to go anyway, that's on you, not the CDC. The warnings are displayed on TV screens that you can see while you are waiting in line at the airport for the TSA to frisk you and X-ray your luggage.

uh, boy. This “coincidence” has my radar antennae raising my tin foil hat about a foot off my head. They probably, maybe, didn’t have Africa in mind, but they sure knew about the immigrants and what is up with the kids dying or being paralyzed???

CDC has become more interested in social engineering than disease control, getting into gun control, etc. maybe if their funds are cut, they will focus on its primary goal.

Ah. I see what you're doing. You're having a little fun at ol' Texas Eagle's expense.

Kudos. Your parody of the Lib thought process really had me going.

I applaud your efforts. You are the most convincing Lib troll I have come across. Perhaps in the history of FR.

Note to self: Send trolldar in for calibration.
