We won, didn't we?

Finally, someone else says it!

I've felt that we're winning for a long time now, in that if we win the War On islamist Terror, I believe it follows that we will have won the Vietnam War, and the last vestiges of communism will have been torn down, like I think Ho's old Soviet slab-style tomb will eventually be.

You didn't know Marines on Hill 10, about 4 clicks NNW, did you? We stayed with them one night, joking that they needed the Army to protect them, just in case. Though nothing happened that night. If you're a Seinfeld watcher, and know that tractor story.... But yours is so much richer and deeper. The kind of thing that does make me feel, "Yes. We sure did."

Yes, we won Buddy. We held on for eight long tough years, 10,000 miles away from home against a vicious enemy and all the titanic support the whole communist world could throw in. In the end, our allies were abandoned but by that time the communists were worn out. They never thought that we “soft Americans” could put up a fight like this.

After all of that, there weren’t any more “national liberation wars” - Soviet-sponsored civil wars. There were proxy wars like Angola and Nicaragua and direct intervention like Afghanistan but no more national liberation wars. We showed them that we had the guts and hang in there even when the press and our people and even our parents had run out of steam.

I’m deeply proud of us and our long fight. We were the best our country could offer. It was my privilege to be one of us then and if I could go back then, with my friends again I sure would.

Semper Fi - and thanks for being with us - I’m sure you were excellent protection.

as long as returning vets are welcomed by ordinary Vietnamese I’d say we won.

how is the food there? I’m dying to see what the food stalls have to offer today (as long as the meat is from a
non-canid non-feline non-rodent, non-primate)..

The food was outstanding and most everybody was very friendly and at worst indifferent. I even had two young guys say “welcome back!”

That was really well done. Buck said that he may be able to get funding for more productions if this one gets enough views, so pas the podcast on.
