Honduras Declares State of Emergency Near Tegucigalpa Due to Chikungunya

Authorities have estimated that about 1,000 people in Villa de San Francisco have contracted the disease.

The Honduran government Thursday declared state of emergency in the town of Villa de San Francisco, some 25 miles from the capital city of Tegucigalpa, after hundreds of people were diagnosed with Chikungunya virus sympotons.

"We are extremely concerned. About 200 families have been infected, causing each member to infect another,” said Romeo Montoya, representative in Honduras of the Pan American Health Organization (OPS).

Montoya explained that the spread could have been brought to the country by several community members who travelled to El Salvador, where the Chikungunya virus is spreading rapidly.

The spread started 20 days ago. Then, villagers began to feel dizzy and suffered fevers of 104º, according to the OPS.

“This is no dengue. It is a new virus,” Montoya said. Doctors often confuse Dengue with Chikungunya because both diseases are transmitted through mosquito bites.

Yep! Many of us who grew up in the ‘40s-’50s are still here because of the trucks that drove slowly down our streets while fogging the area with DDT! We kids would run along behind the trucks ‘in the fog’ and no one ever got sick.
