RAF Tornado squadron saved from the scrap heap to bomb Isil
The Telegaph, UK ^ | October 2, 2014 | Matthew Holehouse, Political Correspondent, at RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus

AN RAF Tornado squadron that was due to be disbanded has been reprieved for a year in order to bomb Isil, David Cameron announced on Thursday night as he thanked British pilots for their bravery and sacrifice.

In a surprise visit to RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus, Mr Cameron said the public must "never forget" the risks taken British aircrews whose actions in Iraq "make Britain safer".

Two more Tornado GR4 jets have been dispatched to join six British planes taking part in bombing raids and reconnaissance missions over Iraq under Operation Shader, Mr Cameron said.

One left on Thursday, and another will be sent on Friday.

The further planes does not mean the RAF is planning to increase the number of bombing raids, a Downing Street source said.

But Mr Cameron said it would allow the RAF to "keep up the tempo" over a sustained campaign.

And in what will be regarded as a u-turn, the lifetime of No 2 Squadron, which is carrying out the raids will be extended by a year.

The squadron, comprising 16 Tornados and based at RAF Marham in Norfolk, was due to be disbanded in March as Britain withdraws from operations in Afghanistan.

It was due to be replaced by a new squadron of advanced Typhoon fighters based at RAF Lossiemouth, Scotland.

But that move has been postponed by a year in light of the battle against Isil, Downing Street said.

The Tornado is better suited to ground-attack missions, while the Typhoon is designed for aerial combat and patrolling UK airspace.

I remember against Iraq, the British were given some of the most dangerous tasks such as cratering runways. Probably not just to give them the most dangerous jobs, but probably that was what their planes were best for.

If Cameron really cared about keeping Britain safe, he’d be clearing out the Muzzies they already let in and putting up barriers to any more. When the predominant name given to boys born in the UK recently is Muhammed, you’ve got a larger problem already inside the tent.

Our Aussie freeper friend Naturalman1975 first exposed the myth, quite simply. Mohammed only becomes no 1 (and even that’s questionable) when you include every last variant, BUT you can do that with any name!. Mary being a classic example. At worst, all it means is UK Muslims have a shocking lack of imagination.

BTW, I have to reply to this myth usually about once a week at least. Honestly, I must have replied on this issue on FR a couple of dozen times. The two most annoying repeat issues are this and UK self-defence. And on RightNation too. Although the latter seems to have stopped after I corrected posters there.

BUT this idea that Mohammed is no 1 and ergo means the UK is awash with Muslims (96% of the UK still not Muslim...) is a nonsense. It’s even more sad that intelligent men like Allen West (sic?) repeat the myth on their websites.

If anyone cares to check the official UK top 10/50/100 lists of names of the last ten or five years, you’ll see Mohammed either dosent make the top 100 or appears low down.

Labour left a £38B hole in the defence budget alone. As to Blair, he is, in the immortal words of Billy Connolly, ‘about as popular as a fart in a spacesuit’....

The man is loathed in the UK, from both left and right. Any public connection he would have with Labour would be a liability for them.

Ok - I shall not repeat that information until I better understand and investigate the data as you have laid it out in your post. Just one favor, please note that I did not say “Number One”, rather I said “predominant” to mean it rises to a level of significant notice and worthy of comment. Thanks for the interaction across the Atlantic - I enjoy getting different perspectives.
