Oops, sorry, misread your headline. Now I’m scrambling to find poll results from HK pre-handover.

I’ve probably been here since before you were born, newbie. If I were a disrupter, I would’ve been banned a long time ago.

Still waiting for you to name one large protest... You can’t. You’re a fount of propaganda.

Okay, since you are unable to cite a single large pro-democracy protest in Hong Kong prior to, or within a couple of years after, the here are a couple of pre-handover protests that indicate the strength of the natives' love for their freedom.

http://www.cnn.com/WORLD/9611/15/hong.kong/index.html
http://www.cnn.com/WORLD/9701/27/hong.kong.protest/

In the first one, 40 freedom lovers showed up. In the second, 20.

Out of seven million people.

Wow, pathetic. Not surprised you're slinking away from this thread as fast as you can.

“Still waiting for you to name one large protest... You can’t. You’re a fount of propaganda.”

You really don’t know how ridiculous and ignorant you are.

Also,

It’s hard to know what your intentions are on this thread. Why would a supposed conservative go to a thread about people standing up to tyranny and try to demean those who are doing so?

Hong Kong should never have been allowed under PRC control.

...

If Hong Kong ends up putting the commies out of power, perhaps it was a wise move after all.

the Chinese communist’s one-party dictatorship.”

...

I’d also like to see an end to the one party dictatorship in Washington, DC.

Wow, did you find that name on Google? Did you ever confront the SOB on FR? I did. Many times. Truth be told, you actually remind me of that lame ashhole.

Name calling is always the first resort of people who can’t support their arguments with fact or reason. You are clearly one of those people.

Now, again... Tell us about one significant protest by Hongkongers against Beijing in the years around 1997. You can’t because it never happened as you yourself have claimed.

Why am I doing this? Because I hate liars and hypocrites.

pro-democracy protest on 21 May 1989 drew... 1.5 million marchers in Hong Kong. Details of each yearly protest since then at link

“Tell us about one significant protest by Hongkongers against Beijing in the years around 1997”

You are seriously asking this question?

He’s a disrupter.

I doubt he cares. If he’s not, then he is an ignorant Buffon.

It’s quite laughable what he’s asking.

Good job.

Yes, thank you. ‘89 was a Tiananmen Square protest, not specifically aimed at the handover. By 2002 we begin seeing significant numbers, which isn’t too surprising to me because by then Beijing had already showed its hand and struck down HK’s Bill of Rights. The oppression got worse every year after that and the size of the protests grew accordingly.

What I was getting at was this: what was happening in HK right around the time of the handover? Were people for or against it? Check out the links in post #27. Those two protests only drew 40 and 20 people, respectively, such was their hatred (indifference toward?) of the West, Caucasians, Western freedoms and democracy. It led them to believe the “one nation, two systems” crap the tyrants in Beijing promised them. This, despite the fact that Beijing had already announced it was going to gut the Bill of Rights and disband the elected legislature.

Now they’re crying. But it was all totally predictable. At the time, I predicted we’d be seeing boat people pouring out of HK by the year 2000. I was way off on that one, but we may get there yet.

You saw blue plum's post.

I figure you'll claim such demonstrations are not significant. There are other yearly anti-communist demonstrations.

Every year in Hong Kong since 1990 there is a huge demonstration against the communist and for freedom in China.

There are myriad images all over the web of these huge demonstrations and vigils that happen every year on the anniversary of the June 4 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre by the Communists

Here are just a couple photos of one of the demonstrations and the vigil of 1997, less than a month before the Communists took over from the UK.

Hong Kong is a civilized place with rule of law and the British Judicial System. There is a representative, partially directly elected legislature, although limited and with the deck stacked toward pro-Beijing reps.

Pro-freedom and democracy organizations and political parties have been active before and since China took over.

Candidates representing these views have garnered the most support in the direct elections, but due to the Beijing-imposed structure still are a minority in the legislature.

“such was their hatred (indifference toward?) of the West, Caucasians, Western freedoms and democracy. It led them to believe the “one nation, two”

I see where you are coming from. Not a good place. Not a Christian or conservative place.

“At the time, I predicted we’d be seeing boat people pouring out of HK by the year 2000.”

Man, your ignorance is astounding. Boat people?

There were actually “boat people” who left, huge numbers, except they went on planes and moved to Vancouver.

Check out modern times and reality.
