Nearly three-quarters of the public (72%) now thinks religion is losing influence in American life, up 5 percentage points from 2010 to the highest level in Pew Research polling over the past decade. And most people who say religion's influence is waning see this as a bad thing.
Perhaps as a consequence, a growing share of the American public wants religion to play a role in U.S. politics. The share of Americans who say churches and other houses of worship should express their views on social and political issues is up 6 points since the 2010 midterm elections (from 43% to 49%). The share who say there has been too little expression of religious faith and prayer from political leaders is up modestly over the same period (from 37% to 41%). And a growing minority of Americans (32%) think churches should endorse candidates for political office, though most continue to oppose such direct involvement by churches in electoral politics.
Much more at link.
The true question is not whether religion is gaining or losing, the question is which religion. Secular humanism is as much a religion as Catholicism, Hindu or Islam. It is denial that is the prevarication. There is no such thing as as a functional human with no beliefs about ethics, reality and metaphysics. A godless religion is a religion all the same.
If true, we will follow Europe’s decline.
Not mine!
“On a scale of 1 to 5 - with 5 being the highest - how much does religion influence YOUR life?”
How about that for an additional question? Then analyze the results to see whether people are hypocritically trying to shrug the burden off onto others (politicians, etc.)
As always, we’ve gotten the government, society, etc. that we deserve.
The Pledge, invocation prayers, Ten Commandments monuments, “In God We Trust” on our money, saying “Bless you” for sneezes, and “Merry Christmas” - none of this will save a wicked nation. If we learn nothing else from reading the Prophets, we should at least learn that.
Not when it comes to Islam.
Well, when religious leaders start championing ideas and concepts that were for centuries considered taboo, or alien, or immoral, then yeah, I’d say religion is losing its impact. That always happens when you screw over your base.
This Pie chart absolutely disgust me! That 49% of a population would demand a private business private any service that violate its religious obligation is the sick sign of a lost country who’s people deserve no rights of their own.
