LONDON (AFP) British Prime Minister David Cameron will hold talks on Wednesday with Irans President Hassan Rouhani over unrest in Iraq and Syria, officials said, announcing the first meeting between the countries leaders since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
The talks will occur on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. They come as Western powers seek to build support for the fight against the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group, which holds swaths of territory in Iraq and Syria and which has beheaded two US journalists and a British aid worker.
Britain has had tense ties with Iran since its revolution in 1979 brought anti-Western mullahs to power.
Amid an apparent thawing in relations recently, Britain said in June that it planned to reopen its Tehran embassy, closed nearly three years ago when a government-sanctioned mob stormed it.

Mr. Cameron:
If Iran’s offer is to help against IS in exchange for a free pass on their nukes — tell them no deal.
Wow: there’s a world leader out there more pathetic and sad than Obama....
It is even worse!!
Let us have our Nukes-
Sell out Israel-
gives us money-
gives us weapons-
AND LAST _GIVE US INTEL ON THE AIR STRIKES-
(so we can warn our partners- Al quada- and ISIS)
The crazy thing is it’s NOT a meeting of the countries leaders as reported in this article. The British leader is meeting with Iran’s spokesman.
We all know Khamenei is the power in Iran.
At least, Cameron will be assured that he will meet with a high representative of the ROP.
Maybe the U.K. wants to get more intimately involved with Iran by helping with its nuke program, much like some of the deals made with the enemy in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Careful, you are standing and pissing on the graves of some brave men and women when you sneer. We get it, you don’t like us and don’t care for our sacrifice at your side in both those wars. Don’t worry, Hollywood will do its bit and just like WW1 and 2, nobody will remember anyone else fighting there but you lot.
And its not like America dosent stab people in the back, that Suez wound of ours is still visible.
Your crude and dishonest accusation notwithstanding, I was criticizing your government and a pair of incompetent commanders who lacked the respectability of most soldiers. One of them—a homosexual—even flamed effeminately and publicly at one of our commanders after leaving duty.
But let’s discuss the topic at hand. Why is your government getting so close with the Iranian government again? The Iranian military forces and their nuclear facilities should be bombed out of existence. The Iranian regime is not an ally.
Firstly, please name this gay, flaming British commander. I’d also remind you of the shameful attack by an American commander on the British commander Tim Collins (he of the great speech pre-invasion that even Bush 43 wanted a copy of) which almost cost a true hero and modern British army legeand his career.
Secondly, as Churchill said, jaw jaw is better than war war. Lets not have a war if we can help it. Perhaps we think dialogue is better than gung ho heroics. Remember that the Iranian PM studied at Glasgow Uni, and knows the UK. It would be stupid not to open dialogue with a nation that’s at least willing to talk. This is real life, not a John Wayne film. The British move is not weakness, its clever. The option for war/military strikes is always there. But lets see what we can get without the need for conflict.
And Cameron is just the Queen’s spokesman...
