Israel Sending Doctors, Nurses To Africa To Save Lives Of Ebola Victims

By Joel Leyden
Israel News Agency

Jerusalem — September 22, 2014 … Doctors and nurses from Israel will be risking their lives as they join an international effort to combat the Ebola epidemic sweeping across Africa.

Doctors and other health care professionals from Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa and Beer Sheva who specialize in infectious disease are being sent to Sierra Leone, Cameroon and Liberia to treat infected patients and help prevent spread of the deadly virus.

Two physicians are already in Cameroon on behalf of the Israel Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem and others will be joining them in the near future, while a shipment of medicine and medical equipment is planned to depart from Ben-Gurion International Airport this week.

The US, along with a host of other nations, and international organizations have scrambled to combat the worst Ebola outbreak in history, which has killed some 2,700 people and infected around 6,300 others in West Africa since the early spring, according to the World Health Organization.

At a special deliberation Friday on the situation at the UN in New York, Israel Ambassador Ron Prosor said that in the same way Israel extended aid to Haiti, Ghana and the Philippines following devastating earthquakes and tsunamis, it is now prepared to tackle “the new challenge” confronting the world.

“The international community holds the tools and the knowledge to save thousands of human beings, but at present the world’s response isn’t enough, people are pleading for help,” said Prosor. He added that a world crisis requires an international response because “every country has a role in the fight against Ebola. The entire world has to replace the indifference with initiative and finding solutions.”

Meanwhile, IsraAID, an Israel based humanitarian aid organization that responds to emergency crises worldwide, is sending two medical teams of its own experts to the Ebola-stricken Sierra Leone and Liberia later this week, according to the report.

One Israel team will assist in operating a program for treating trauma that aims to help the general population deal with fear of the disease and the stress created in its wake. The other will instruct households in the use of hygiene kits to prevent further spread of the virus.

?This dramatic increase in U.S. commitment comes alongside beefed-up responses from several countries, largely focused on Sierra Leone. The Cuban government is sending 165 health professionals to that country; China is deploying 59 health workers; the U.K. government has promised to construct a 62-bed hospital in the country’s capital, Freetown; and many other nations have promised other modest forms of assistance. The French government, on a significantly more modest level, has committed 20 experts in biological disasters to its former colony Guinea.”

Meanwhile... The Palestinian Authority announced they are sending 30 specially trained suicide bombers to “send this zionist plot, that Ebola is, to the depths of Hell.”, said an unnamed unofficial source.

That country is far too selfless.

Most of those countries would vote against them at the U.N. on anything.

The Israelis will be in danger as much from the machete-weilding Muzz as from Ebola.

I think what a lot of people do not realize is that these countries are NOT sending teams out of the goodness of their hearts.

No country can afford to have this disease jump out of Africa.

When it does, expect to see global attention ramp up significantly.

Self interest is what is going on here. Not selfless charity.

Rightly; I believe that this is much worse than what we’re being told and I frankly believe that the best thing in the world is to keep it in Africa and not have it spread anywhere else. Israel and others are sending people for a reason and a good offense will be more effective and safe than a defensive measure.
