An argument that society and familiesand youwill be better off if nature takes its course swiftly and promptly
Thats how long I want to live: 75 years.
This preference drives my daughters crazy. It drives my brothers crazy. My loving friends think I am crazy. They think that I cant mean what I say; that I havent thought clearly about this, because there is so much in the world to see and do. To convince me of my errors, they enumerate the myriad people I know who are over 75 and doing quite well. They are certain that as I get closer to 75, I will push the desired age back to 80, then 85, maybe even 90.
I am sure of my position. Doubtless, death is a loss. It deprives us of experiences and milestones, of time spent with our spouse and children. In short, it deprives us of all the things we value.
But here is a simple truth that many of us seem to resist: living too long is also a loss. It renders many of us, if not disabled, then faltering and declining, a state that may not be worse than death but is nonetheless deprived. It robs us of our creativity and ability to contribute to work, society, the world. It transforms how people experience us, relate to us, and, most important, remember us. We are no longer remembered as vibrant and engaged but as feeble, ineffectual, even pathetic.

Heh, I would encourage him and his ilk to aim quite a bit lower.
I don’t think he should wait until 75. There’s no time like now.
I suggest he not wait that long. The world would be better off without him now.
Hah, if anyone is around for his 75th birthday and reminds him of this article he WILL say: "Hey, it was just a story to turn in to the boss."
Why wait? Oh, and take your scumbag brother with you.
Check out where this nut job works.
Wow. If I am going die when I am infantile, I should have died years ago.
This is typical Fascist tripe.
They want to eliminate the cost of Social Security & Medicare payments.
They want to STEAL the estates.
They want to eliminate the older conservative voters.
They want to use the resulting revenue to BUY MORE VOTERS.
My personal belief is that everyone lives the exact same number of days. I call those days “today”.
Setting up the ‘duty to die” scenario, Zeke? This man is 57. In ten years he will have changed his mind. I guarantee it.
My mom is 93 and her wisdom and insights into life are an amazing gift to our extended family.
Don’t forget that he helpeld concieve Obamacare which aims to kill unhealthy seniors.
He’ll get a waiver
You might try reading the article before making such statements.
The author specifically says he is not proposing policy changes to incentivize or impose this idea. He merely discusses his reasons for holding this opinion and asks others to think about it.
BTW, I found nothing in the article that could be used to figure out whether the gentleman is liberal or conservative.
In some ways this is a very conservative POV.
Why wait Zeke?
PS: Take all of your left wing whinners with you.
This a hole is on my airport list.
How long do we have to wait for this event?
I suggest you do a bit more research on this creep.
Unlike others on this thread, I’m addressing specifically what the article says.
If the author is wrong in his arguments, why not show where and how? Instead of extended ad hominem attacks.
