To wake yesterday morning, not yet knowing whether Great Britain was alive or dead, was a strange and sad sensation.
Like most English observers, I greeted the news with unbridled delight. A victory for Britain, albeit by nine percentage points, means we ought to raise a toast this weekend to the good sense of the Scottish people.
Yet when I reflected on the result, my delight slowly turned to disquiet.
For the truth is that the campaign has been a terrible warning about the future of the United Kingdom, the curse of nationalism and the dreadful dangers of a new politics based on crude populist appeals to the powerless and the alienated.
Only a few years ago, many historians believed that we were living in a post-nationalist age, in which appeals to blood and soil had lost their old power to move and frighten.

I’ll take nationalism all day over tribalism, it’s only real competitor. There is no such thing as this “post-nationalist” hogwash.
Scotland is probably not infested with Muslims yet. I can certainly see why the Scots do not wish to be drawn into Sharia, and prefer to separate from the source.

Not true
Lots of camel-humpers have moved there
“The vast majority of Muslims in the United Kingdom live in England: 2,660,116 (5.02% of the population). 76,737 Muslims live in Scotland (1.45%), 45,950 in Wales (1.50%), and 3,832 in Northern Ireland (0.21%)”

Perhaps Muslims and Sharia were components of the Yes movement. But, from what I can gather, it was primarily about wanting “more free stuff”. The same motivaters that drives the “gimme” crowd here in the US. Fortunately, the Scots had enough clear thinkers to save themselves from themselves......
Gee Dom. We can’t all be enlightened faculty lounge lizards.
Their is nothing wrong with local government. The move of the UK to federalism is not a bad thing. NATO and the EU make a federalist Europe possible, but then the socialists pushed to centralize all power and people are pushing back.
Nationalism is always present. It may remain dormant for a while. When it’s awakened, it’s usually for real reasons - political, economic, and/or cultural.
Look what's happening to Europe. It's being over-run by people who hate them, impoverished, in debt slavery to the banks, and cultures are crumbling. Mideastern countries which suffered our regime change disasters are in tatters. In the US, power is moving upward as we lose our freedoms, culture and middle class.
War and disease will bring civilization to a halt if we don't go back to governable entities, which are defined nations that protect themselves, their citizens, and their culture and way of life.
He sees nationalism as the main problem instead of a failure of big government. People want self determination rather than control from a faceless bureaucracy. In the US the problem is lack of nationalism as people ignore their country being overrun by a foreigners with no respect for our laws or culture. This is not only accepted but encouraged by our political leaders who are sworn to uphold the law and defend the Constitution. Both the US and UK were strongest when they were most nationalistic. Multiculturalism is the problem, not Nationalism.
They better HURRY UP and figure out why nationalism is preferable to the Sharia that is being imposed on them.
They have no more than ONE Generation to get it right, before they will be in civil wars that they cannot win.
Previous generations, who took our constitutional traditions rather more seriously, would have been horrified to see them ripped up so casually.

Yep. People in power everywhere seem to think that the Law BELONGS to them personally and that they can do as they please.
Not all nationalism is bad. The liberal/socialist/globalists always put up this false dichotomy:
1. Evil Nazi Germany = nationalism
2. Global socialist rule = utopia
Somehow, I fail to see how global socialism would be preferable to national socialism (Nazism).
An attitude I will never understand. Stupid English!
Is anyone condemning "Third World" or non-white nationalism?
