Dear Scotland: An open letter from your Canadian cousins
The Globe and Mail ^ | 9/12/2014 | GLOBE EDITORIAL

Dear Scotland,

You probably don’t know this, but you made us. The first European to cross the continent and reach our Pacific coast was Alexander Mackenzie – a Scot. Our first prime minister and chief Father of Confederation, Sir John A. Macdonald? Scottish. So too our second PM. Our country’s national dream, a railroad from sea to sea, was realized in 1885 when Sir Donald Smith, head of the Canadian Pacific Railway, drove The Last Spike at Craigellachie – a place named after a village in his homeland. The man who did the most to create Canada’s system of universal public health care, and chosen as “The Greatest Canadian” in a national survey of CBC viewers, was Tommy Douglas. He was born in Falkirk. The thistle and the red lion rampant on our national coat of arms identify you as one of our four founding nations; half of our provincial flags contain a Saint Andrew’s cross; and one of our provinces – Nova Scotia – is named after you. There are said to be more pipers and pipe bands in Canada than in Scotland. And nearly five million Canadians identify their ethnic origin as entirely or partly Scottish, which means we have almost as many Scottish-Canadians as you have people.

I really don’t know what to think about this. It’s immensely foolish to let 16 year olds vote on such a monumental issue, that’s for sure.

I guess I’m a little more concerned about the US surviving 2 more years of Obama.

We'll tell you when it's safe to come out of the kitchen.

I think Scotland should take control of Canada as it’s rightfully theirs.

A lot of Scots in Canada speak French as their first language and they see themselves as part of the Quebec nation. Federalism works.

A divorce never works out well. Either for a family or a nation. Ties are not easily dissolved and one should try less drastic measures before calling it quits.

That hasn’t been tried yet in Scotland. Independence may be biting off more than most Scots want to chew. Plenty of sober reflection and stock-taking should accompany a decision of that magnitude.

Obama is merely a symptom of our rebellion. Union and submission to Christ, not autonomy, is the only hope of the nations.

2 Chronicles 7:14
14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

I don’t have dog in their fight, since I am not even a little bit Scottish, but I hope they do take their leave to be their own nation. They have always been a distinct, courageous people and I have no doubt they would do very well on their own. Who knows? Maybe they could have their own gun laws again.

The Brits just need to be England again - they have enough trouble with their identity as it is lately and shouldn’t inflict their poor choices on their neighbors anymore.

If the Scots are like most Americans, the 16 year olds are as qualified to vote as the older idiots.

Yeah, look what it did for those two countries back on July 4, 1776.

A new Scotland would have even more draconian gun laws than it already does.

Britain/UK and England are not the same thing.

"Britain/UK and England are not the same thing"

I'll take your word for it. But if Wales goes it alone too and Northern Ireland returns to Ireland, THEN would England just be England again? (Plus hundreds of thousands of Nigerians, Pakistanis, et al.?)

I made an effort to find out what percentage of the population of Scotland are muslims as compared to England... It seems there is quite difference..! less then 1% for Scotland....better then 10% for England...the difference seems quit large... I may have made a mistake...maybe someone else should check it out....

Anyway.....maybe that's the driving force behind all of this... I can see the Scots having the necessary stones to tell the muslims to GET THE HELL OUT...and stay out..!

5.3 million people is rather small population wise. I assume that number is because the weather in Scotland is less hospitable than southern England.

If there were a new Scotland, would New Scotland Yard have to change their name?
