On September 10, an article written by Seth Borenstein of the Associated Press trumpeted a claim of good news with the headline: Scientists say the ozone layer is recovering. The basis for Borensteins headline is a statistical analysis:
For the first time in 35 years, scientists were able to confirm a statistically significant and sustained increase in stratospheric ozone, which shields the planet from solar radiation that causes skin cancer, crop damage and other problems.

Ozone is a naturally generated form of oxygen.
It is generated in two ways:
1. High voltage discharge (lightning)
2. Ultraviolet light
When either of these occur in an O2 environment, O3 is generated.
However, O3 is extremely unstable. It naturally reverts back to O2 by shedding 1 of it’s oxygen atoms.
Interaction with other chemicals in the air can accelerate the breakdown of O3 into O2... but most man made chemicals never reach the ozone layer to have any impact whatsoever.
So why the hole in the ozone layer over the south pole???
Simple... THERES NO FLIPPING SUNLIGHT THERE!!!
The only way that the ozone layer can be destroyed is to put out the sun for crying out loud!
It’s amazing what people buy into these days without doing just a little of their own research.
Well I am not willing to write off CFC as having negative impact on Ozone, but it is important that they discovered the hole the first time they looked... so it is true that the hole could have always been there, and it was not the result of any human action.
We have no evidence whatsoever that there hasn’t been a hole in the ozone layer over the south pole since the age of the dinosaurs.
We can prove, in a lab, that CFC’s do destroy ozone, which isn’t very stable anyway (O3).
We can’t prove in a lab that CO2 is heating the atmosphere.
The hole is getting bigger because the Chinese don’t give a rip.
Ozone is soon hit by the same UV light that created it and splits into O2 and O, or O, O, and O. It will also return to O2 and O when combining with other reactants including O2. After creation, Ozone has a lifespan of 8 minutes, unless UV is present to continue it's generation.
Sunlight is the primary source of this UV light in the upper atmosphere, so polar regions will always have thinner, lower or no Ozone, depending on the seasons.
It is also interesting to note that O2 also blocks UV light as it also absorbs the energy that splits it to O + O. It also totally negates alarmist concerns about the "Ozone Layer".
The thing that cracks me up the most is the whackos say that everything is going to die from pollution in the cities and then say that pollution is “punching a hole” in the ozone layer...well...which is it? There is no ozone (or O2) “layer” and all of that pollution they see has no effect on the upper atmosphere because it is too dense, they would never see the haze if it was in the upper atmosphere.
That’s what I was saying, sorry if I wasn’t clear. We know CFC’s will destroy O3, hell lots of things will break down O3 worst thing O3 can run into is a single O molecule...:)
The main point I was trying to make is, for all we know, there has been a hole over the south pole for eons...We found the hole the first time we looked.. so we have no historical reference to know how long its been there.
I’m not against the banning of CFC’s, evidence is pretty clear they do indeed have impact on Ozone, just not sure of the doom and gloom scenarios that were tossed about back when they were trying to get the ban passed.
To my knowledge there is no documented proof that CFCs will have adverse effects on any atmospheric models. Correct me if I am wrong...it’s all about making jobs for indigent college types (The EPA).
I spent some time in Australia - the cancer risk down there is real. Settled science. They are religious about the steps people need to take before going outside.
This was especially true in Taz, Barossa Valley, Melbourne, Perth, etc.
The ozone hole was only seen in the 1970’s by satellites. It has been expanding and contracting for billions of years prior to that. My understanding is that DOW had the patent on the freon but is was running out so they reformulated it and patent that one (not as good) and then worked to ban the better working freon that they would have no patent on.
I did that recently when I realized I hadn't hear of acid rain for over two decades.......
