Explosion in Syria kills senior leadership of Ahrar al-Sham
The Guardian ^ | 10 September 2014 | Martin Chulov

The senior leadership of one of the most influential Syrian rebel organisations has been wiped out in a devastating blast that is likely to greatly diminish the group as a fighting force.

The blast killed at least 12 senior leaders of Ahrar al-Sham, including its leader, Hassan Abboud, when it hit a meeting where the group had gathered in Syria's northern Idlib province, near the Turkish border.

The cause of the explosion remained unexplained almost a day later, with some Ahrar al-Sham members insisting a rival group had been responsible, while others claimed an explosion had mistakenly taken place in an adjoining ammunition base.

I think ths is the group of moderates that Obama wants to support. Now he will support the new leadership which is far more radical than the ones they just killed.

They’re not moderates, not members of the Free Syrian Army. They’re islamists and include some ex-alqaida members.

These guys were fighting ISIS and were the people that rescued NBC’s Richard Engle when he was kidnapped by Ba’athists.

They were Muslims, what else do you need to know?

Probably ISIS, but maybe Assad.

So many options to choose from.

The thing is, the only sane thing to do is to support Assad. ISIS is a potentially civilization-ending crisis, and the Mideast needs all the dictators it can keep to stop them.

Our only criteria should be that the dictator protects minorities and strives to protect its citizens. We're on the wrong side.

Agree basically, it seems we messed up removing the despots we did and then we give the rebels, terrorists reign to run free. A major foul-up. That’s how it appears to me.

Sometimes I wish somehow we could just evacuate the good people out, Christians and then, just turn our backs to it, I guess arm the Kurds.

***Don’t know why they’d name a movie ‘Blow Up’ when nobody blowed up?***

MAD magazine spoofed it as “THROW UP”.

The article reports:

“The bodies of many of those killed were intact, photographs from the scene purported to show, suggesting that they had died from asphyxiation, rather than blast injuries.

Several Ahrar al-Sham officials said the men had been trapped in an enclosed, possibly reinforced, room and had been unable to escape. “

If they were buried inside a room, it would probably take a day to suffocate, but a thermobaric bomb (fuel-air explosive) would do it in just a few minutes. That is one of the big reasons that they are so good for bunkers and tunnels (also big blast per pound).

If someone nailed them with a bunker buster, then they are a sophisticated air force. If someone planted/delivered such a bomb on the ground, they are likely a sophisticated covert service of some sort.

Maybe some nation state is helping to shape the battlefield to support ISIS, by clearing out their competition. There are several suspects with capability, Syria (with Russian help), Turkey, the USA, a major European state or Israel.

Maybe if given a carte blanche to blow up anyone he wants in the region, Obama’s folks will use that power to create more mischief, by selectively targeting ISIS/al Queada/Muslim Brotherhood opponents.

It is still possible that some local yahoos might have captured a weapon and delivered it by vehicle, but surviving witnesses would have likely seen that coming.
