Four Maywood firefighters have been relieved of duty, and more could be suspended Wednesday, for refusing to remove American flag decals from their helmets and lockers.
The four refused to comply with an order issued last week by Chief Craig Bronaugh to remove all stickers from their helmets and lockers. The four drew the line when it came to the flag decals.

The four suspended firefighters said they were told that the order was issued because of racial discord on the department. The four, who include two white firefighters, a black firefighter, and a fourth firefighter who is a Cuban émigré, said no such problems exist.

Maywood is a majority black suburb which is west of Chicago. Along with Bellwood, it is one of the poorer suburbs west of the city. Maywood was a formerly blue collar community in comparison to its more affluent neighbors across the Des Plaines River (River Forest and Oak Park). Maywood suffers from a high crime rate and poverty.
In more prosperous times, the Village of Maywood was a largely Italian community.
In the Village Hall, Martin Luther King, Jr.’s photo used to be on display in the council chamber.
Very soon, apparently, it will no longer be a matter of secession, instead it will center on a question of amputation.

Seriously. Did anyone notice the shape of the chief’s head? Birth trauma, or what? What makes someone’s head ridge out like a 58 Cadillac, anyway?

What a way to make conservatives sympathize with the SEIU. Most firefighters are represented by the IAFF, but this bunch is represented by the SEIU.
Makes me wonder what is up with this.

I don't know if the OP deliberately edited this out but it's hard to see any other way it's not in this post because it's right there in the sourced article. Rosen is the SEUI rep.

The union is SEIU, rather than the typical IAFF. That makes me assume something is up. SEiu is not a good bunch of people.
The Internet is full of references; as a sometime Keys resident, my impression is that ‘Cuban émigrés’ do far better in every category than other Spanish-speaking immigrants.
