Want robots at McDonald's? Hike minimum wage: Zell Matthew J. Belvedere | @Matt_Belvedere Wednesday, 3 Sep 2014

Video

Federal and state efforts to increase the minimum wage are misguided and pose serious risks to the economy and the job market, billionaire Sam Zell told CNBC on Wednesday.

"The tinkering with the minimum wage is a very dangerous game," the chairman of Equity Group Investments said in a "Squawk Box" interview. "You start talking about a $13 or a $15 minimum wage, and you're going to have robots that are operating McDonald's."

Another example of how technology is limiting our freedom.

Ask for a raise, and we’ll replace you with a robot.

And when technology gets even more advanced, you won’t even have to ask for a raise to be thrown out of a job and into the street.

And that fate is coming for nearly every working person in America, and sooner than any of you dream.

Robots would be an improvement over the idiots they currently employ.

How smug of you.

Maybe if these unfortunate people were paid a living wage, they wouldn't have to work three jobs and get no sleep, thereby screwing up your fat burger.

And when your job can be done more cheaply by technology or by flooding the country with immigrants having your skill set, what will you be worth?

Hate to tell you, but they actually are. Lots of McDonald’s stuff is prepackaged and frozen elsewhere.

If you work in the tech industry, your skill set is outdated in 3-5 years. You actually have to learn new skills to stay employed. Automation is not the end of the world. It’s a good thing.

And yes, automation is better than some of the employees I encounter at fat burger places. Consistency and speed would be much improved.

Same set up at the local on-campus food court. You order at a touch pad or online with your smartphone. Any mistakes in the ordering process are your own.

This is the Luddite fallacy, as old as the Industrial revolution. There will always be jobs for those who have the appropriate skills, ambition, and willingness to move.

You seem to not living up to your screen name

Ask for a raise, and we’ll replace you with a robot.

These people are not asking for a raise based on job performance or length of employment...

Every company has build in budgeted performance increases every year, typically 2% to 3 % for long term employees...

These people are asking for a hand out...

They are also tools of a union strategy...

What we have now though is that some 60 percent of the American people are leftists, and its 75 percent in New England.

You do understand there is no such thing as a "living wage"

Go ahead and define it for us...

There is a starting wage, sometimes the minimum federal or state standard...

Given time and timing you get a raise based on your performance or ability...then miraculously you no longer make minimum wage...

You have increased your skill level...

Amazingly, I hire people all the time starting at $11.00 to $13.00 an hour based on their training, skills and work history...

Historically that didn't work out so great...

Hardly a revelation. Most large fast food chains have central commissaries...Centralized food supply operations for the individual restaurants

But one place MacDonald could be “robotized” would be in ordering (touch screen ordering by customer) and money collection. This will climate the cashier duties of the workers and will mean one or a few jobs shed
