Ukraine Looks To Stalin Era To Root Out Spies

Kyiv appears to have taken a page from Stalin's book in a bid to root out pro-Russian spies looking to weaken Ukraine's defenses from within.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Valeriy Heletey has announced the creation of a Special Service, similar to a counterintelligence organization that existed during Josef Stalin's rule, to deal with subversive elements in the Ukrainian military.

"Today, more than ever, it is important to get rid of the Russian 'fifth column' in the Ukrainian armed forces and the Defense Ministry," he wrote on Facebook on August 30. "In order to expose and dispose of enemy agents, due to evidence of failures to fulfill commanders' orders and cases of desertion, under my direct supervision the Special Service within the Defense Ministry is being created."

The organization would be "similar to SMERSH, working first and foremost on the front lines and within the military's administration," he wrote. "In the near future we will see the results of its work."

SMERSH is the Russian-language acronym for "Special Methods To Detect Spies," a secret and notorious group created by Stalin from 1943 to 1946 as a military counterintelligence organization.

According to Vadim Birstein, author of "Smersh: Stalin's Secret Weapon," "5.4 million Soviet POWs and civilians sent by the Nazis to Germany as slave laborers went through SMERSH's hands, and 600,000 of them ended up as convicts in the GULAG."

The group also captured or killed 9,500 German agents and arrested about 800 Japanese military and intelligence agents, and at least 400 former White Russians and pro-Japanese Russians, according to Birstein.

SMERSH was jokingly said to stand for "death to spies," and the name featured in James Bond novels as a fictional Soviet counterintelligence organization.

Since his appointment in early July, Heletey has gained a reputation for making bold and controversial comments. Shortly after taking over his post, Heletey rejected any talks with rebel forces until they disarmed. On September 1, he followed up his counterespionage announcement by warning on his Facebook page that "a great war has arrived at our doorstep -- the likes of which Europe has not seen since World War II."

The recent posts came as Ukraine's military has struggled in recent days to repel a counteroffensive by pro-Russian forces in southeastern Ukraine. Before then, Ukraine's forces had been gaining ground against rebels in Donetsk and Luhansk.

Yeah, and yo’ mama wears combat boots and grooms her face with a comb. Anymore FUD (Fear, uncertainty, & Doubt) you want to sow about the Ukraine to harm those people while they root out the corrupt traitors killing their people?

Ok, as far as Stalinist methods is not seen as a dictatorial thing for you (only a first step towards dictatorship actually), I don’t really know what would be seen as such.

Forming a Ukie gestapo now isn’t going to save the puppet fascists in Kiev from extermination.

Well, you certainly can’t just look at or listen to people over there to determine their origin or loyalties, particularly in the eastern part of Ukraine. Many people there speak Ukrainian and Russian equally well, with an indeterminate accent.

Nice try at using a defamatory and strawman argument, but it isn’t going to work here. The Ukraine is currently a constitutional republic with a properly elected legislature and executive branch of government. The principal difference after the desertion and treasonous defection of Yanukovych to avoid a constitutional criminal investigation and prosecution is the perfectly legitimate effort to remove the spies Russia and Yanukovych used to sabotage and subvert the Ukrainian Government and economy ever since it gained independence.

If anyone is responsible for attempting to establish a dictatorship in the Ukraine, it is Yanukovych under the direction of the former Soviet KGB officers such as Putin and the current Russian Federation FSB.

Your serving as a false propagandist and apologist for these criminal Russian activities is comparable in many respects with the criminality of Goebbels’ support for the NAZI crimes against humanity. This is evident in how Russia has reopened only a few schools in the Ukrainian city of Luhansk and teach only the Russian language to ethnic Russian school children in the beginnings of another Russian ethnic cleansing of the Ukrainain people and culture within the borders of their own nation.

The drive is to root out Russian spies from Ukraine’s military. Russian puppet Yanukovich was in power for the past 4 years and his promotion policy was likely friendly to those having their loyalties with Himself and Russia instead of Ukraine.

That is certainly true. There are going to be many an official of otherwise impeccable background who is covertly a dedicated Marxist, Leninist, Communist in sympathy with restoring the Soviet Union and expanding it.

...Saying a man advocating Stalinist practice.
BTW, Ukrainians in Russia are a huge minority and none are screaming discrimination for some reason.
How would you explain it, petty Stalinist?

Only an idiot would not implement some sort of internal security in the Ukrainian Armed Forces considering the facts on the ground. This is the type of thinking that calls for Gitmo to be closed down, and releases Jihadists back into the world.

That being anyone that stands in the way of the ambitions of a Right Sector/Svoboda Pol, or an Oligarch like Kolomoisky.

Just like it was in the old Soviet Union!

Shut up Russkie. You shamelessly apologize for all of Putin's crimes and even the Islamic Chechens when it comes to Sharia law. You yourself are a Stalinist, and your filthy regime in Moscow still won't even acknowledge the full criminal nature of your regime, such as the pact between Russia and Nazi Germany to divide up Europe during WWII. Your country celebrates its own version of Nazism, that is, the Soviet Union.

You shut up too, Russkie. You're a pathological liar who actively covers up for the Nazi regime of Moscow so you can hate on the eeeevil "right Sector" in Ukraine as an excuse to stomp all of Ukraine under a Russian boot.

Whole lot of Russian spies in the military, try to get them all and exchange them for the captive Ukrainian soldiers. Also, in this instance, having a large number of small battalions and a decentralized organizational structure appears to be an advantage as it’s less susceptible to spy infiltration.

You must have a safety valve, puny, and you better find it before your uncontrolled anger get you blown up from inside.

I’m fully aware about many things, more so than you, judging from your temper tantrums.

My worldview is not monochrome as yours, I can clearly see that we aren’t in a position to choose between good and evil most of the time. It is mostly between bad and worse unfortunately, and there are still many patterns between good and bad, and many of these are optimal options under certain curcumstances but your naive idealist approach deny your understanding of that little fact. Not to mention it often makes you mobilized for the evil side as far as it is smart enough to mimic your naive understanding of good.

Considering a level of corruption in Ukraine we can expect anyone disagree with them to end up in new Gulag.
Most of Stalin’s ‘enemies of the people’ were formally charged as German or Japanese spies after all.
