U.S. Official Says 1,000 Russian Troops Have Entered Ukraine By Victoria Butenko, Laura Smith-Spark and Diana Magnay, CNN August 28, 2014

Kiev, Ukraine (CNN) -- A top Ukrainian army officer said a "full-scale invasion" of his country was under way Thursday, as a U.S. official said up to 1,000 Russian troops had crossed Ukraine's southern border to fight alongside pro-Russian rebels.

U.S. officials said Russian troops were directly involved in the latest fighting, despite Moscow's denials.

Rebels backed by Russian tanks and armored personnel carriers fought Ukrainian forces on two fronts Thursday: southeast of rebel-held Donetsk, and along the nation's southern coast in the town of Novoazovsk, about 12 miles (20 kilometers) from the Russian border, said Mykhailo Lysenko, the deputy commander of the Ukrainian Donbas battalion.

"This is a full-scale invasion," Lysenko said, referring to the fighting in the south.

1000 guys an invasion? That isn’t even sick call from the last Soviet invasion of the Ukraine.

It was 1,000 in just one small area that they knew about for certain, 2 armored columns with tanks.

Obviously they are not alone.

Obviously? The imagery from NATO is available, if there were more, the only obvious thing is that they would report more.

Soon to be followed by more Russian Troops. Still its not an invasion until the Red Air Force comes in over the border.

does NATO have drones over there?

Russian Special forces in small teams have been there for months, obviously they are not part of the armored battalion.

The leaders of the “rebels” in Donetsk admitted that there were “thousands” there. The armored columns were not in Donetsk, those “thousands” are other regular Russian Army.

The 10 soldiers captured by Ukraine are part of the 98th Paratroopers, they admitted being ordered in. They admit they are operating in small groups.

The other day a Russian Army K-9 unit was eliminated, 6 men and 2 dogs, think you can see that from satellite??

Hundreds of Russians are reported to have been buried from this conflict, none of those were part of the 1,000 either.

Those 2 armored columns that took Novoarskwhatever are hardly the only regular Russian Army troops in the country. Not by a long shot.

SF teams are small, the dead don’t count anymore, still pales in comparison to the last Soviet invasion of the Ukraine, it isn’t even close.

Could have, but I'd bet this imagery is from satellites or reconnaissance aircraft, likely a combination of both.

“1000 guys an invasion? That isn’t even sick call from the last Soviet invasion of the Ukraine.”

-US and NATO both say 1,000 crossed.
-Rebels said Saturday they have 3-4,000 Russian volunteers, in total.
-Kiev claimed this morning that 20,000 crossed/invaded.

Take your pick.

1,000 guys?

Chit, we had that many "clandestine operatives" hanging around bars in Cairo and that many more helping organize the mobs when we were helping the MB takeover Egypt.

Won’t notice small groups, many working with the “rebels” who proved ineffective enough for Putin to order in some of the heavy stuff.

Now that they the world is not really buying it, I expect a real push might begin as soon as a week, with more armored columns and aircraft.

There is a reason Belarus is sending many BUK anti-air systems to Russia. I bet a lot more equipment is making its way back from other parts too.

When it started to look like the Kiev troops had ground to a halt I wondered how long it would be before there was another invasion. This is, what, the eighth or ninth?

I think Putin is going for a stalemate and there will always be just enough "volunteer" presence to keep things stalemated. That wouldn't take anything like 20,000 troops, probably more like the number the Separatists claim are there as long as they always show up at the right place and the right time.

What are the odds another Kiev brigade will get surrounded and cutoff in the next day or two?

Its the Russian version of what the Americans did with the Contras in Nicaragua in the 1980s.

Destabilization in the form of a “false flag” operation is more conducive to achieving national objectives than outright war.

That the Russians are training, arming, and providing military/logistical support to pro-Russian elements in eastern Ukraine is the world’s worst kept secret.

As long as its a covert war, every one can believe in the polite fiction its just a civil war.

But if Russia makes it official all bets are off. And Putin is not that stupid.

Another armored column was seen entering Ukraine this morning farther to the north of where the columns are moving on Mariupol
