“Ukraine” being a smaller, much poorer, still-corrupt basketcase, without the mining wealth or the factories that Ukraine possessed on Feb.1.

Uh huh, like Hitler only wanted the Sudetenland. Knowing full well, that eventually the rest of Czechoslovakia would fall apart, with the Slovaks demanding their independence.

The Donets as I understand it is these days mostly a poverty stricken rustbelt.
The Crimea is something else.

With good planning, and a Republican government, Ukraine could recover from this in due time. But it would take a Republican minded people to do it.

The Crimea is the Slavic Florida.

Retired people and tourism.

Old people and tourist like warm weather.

Puppet Yanukovich and dictator Putin are corrupt.

BTW, why the sneer quotes when you mention Ukraine?

~Puppet Yanukovich and dictator Putin are corrupt.~

Wasn’t any other administration before Yanukovych corrupt?

Why does Crimea want to be exempted from importing food from Ukraine and why does Crimea want to vote in the upcoming elections if they are part of Russia now?

I bet the Island Meeting was for Obama and Russia to cut up Ukraine. After the meeting new naked invasions. The eastern states will go to Russia—the rump Ukraine will devolve into a Russian Client state. Thats how they did it in the age of Kings. Looks like the 18th Century foreign Policy is back with a vengence. Now if Russia and the USA can work together on this IS problem...

STEP 1: The Russian Crimeans want Ukranian cake.

STEP 2: The Russian Crimeans want to eat the Ukranian cake.

STEP 3: The Russian Crimeans want to rob the Ukrainian camemakers.

STEP 4: The Russian Crimeans want to conquer the Ukrainian cakemakers and steal ownership of the cakemaking businesses for themselves.

STEP 5: The Russian Crimeans want to enslave the Ukrainian cakemakers when they discover the Ukrainians make better cakes than the Russians.

STEP 6: The Russian government arrests the Ukrainian cakemakers and puts them in the Russian Gulags and/or exterminates the Ukrainian cakemakers, leaving the new Russian owners of the Ukrainian cakemaking businesses without anyone who knows how to make a decent cake any further.

STEP 6: Some few Ukrainian cakemakers in the Russian Gulags are permitted to survive so long as they supply the Russian leadership with cakes for celebrations in the Russian dachas.

STEP 7: The Russian owners of the Ukrainian cakemaking businesses are denied the flour and other supplies needed to make cakes any further, so their Novorossiya cakemaking businesses fail, they go hungry, and many are put into Russian Gulags for being too familiar and sympathizing with the enemy Ukrainians whose cakes they liked so much.

STEP 8: [....]

The Russians cannot have their cake and eat it too...or not for very long.

IHMO, Russia need E. Ukraine about as much as a fish need bicycle. It is a neglected underdeveloped place inhabited by a number of unreformed commies. A huge drain of resources to bring it up to standard and also an influx of people who can’t think straight.

Ukraine is corrupt, but...

Russian invasion of a sovereign nation does not denote corruption?

Am I missing something here?

Semenchenko: Ukraine units in Ilovajsk surrounded by Russian troops
The commander of ‘Donbas’ battalion of volunteers, Semen Semenchenko, wrote in Facebook the Ukrainian troops in Ilovajsk have been rounded up by a double circle of Russian troops.

“The Russian Pskov paratroopers’ division units are positioned in Kutejnykovo.

Another Russian unit, the regiment of the Kursk division is in Novokaterynivka.

The Russian tanks are in dug-outs.

There is no help from Ukraine army. Volunteer battalions do not have attached tanks or artillery, Semenchenko said.

Zahar Lavrentiev, one of ‘Azov’ volunteer battalion servicemen, wrote in Facebook Aug. 25 that Russia’s 98th brigade of paratroopers is deploying to Mariupol.
Russia’s98th paratroopers moving on Mariupol now!

“Putin has started the open war. The 98th brigade is marching toward Mariupol now.

We’ve taken two paratroopers prisoners. They were sure they are on a military exercise.

In fact, they are starting WWIII.

Our battalion has not received any heavy weaponry so far,” the serviceman wrote.
