Gambling might join the list of Baltimore City's problems after Horseshoe Casino opens Aug. 26. As the city touts 1,700 new jobs, millions in education funding and an expected economic boost, new billboards advertise hotlines for gambling addiction, a dark side to Horseshoes shiny exterior.
A moral gamble?
With a median household income of $35,000, Park Heights is among Baltimore Citys poorest ZIP codes. In 2012, however, it led state lottery ticket sales, with a total of $34 million, according to a Capital News Service analysis.
Father Zaborowski compares gambling spending to alcohol and drug addiction, which plague the neighborhood, he said. Still, parishioners often dont identify it as a problem, he said, because its often in addition to more destructive behavior.
Father Zaborowski doesnt have a gripe with gambling per se; he plays bingo with his mother when he visits her in Pittsburgh. The problem, he said, is when gambling becomes an addiction and interferes with a persons responsibilities.
When youre taking money that should be feeding your children or housing your child or taking care of your family, thats when it turns into a sin, he said.

Gambling is a tax on the stuipid poor...Just like the lottery.
That being said I don’t think the government should be allowed to step in between the stuipid people and the people they want to give their money to.
I sometimes get a lotto ticket for the entertainment value of it, but I have realistic expectatiosn that I will no doubt lose. I have gone to vegas a few times for the food and entertainment and played some video poker for a while for fun. But I didn’t gamble my life fourtunes on some slim chance to a “payout windfall” either.
Well since we got casinos here in Pennsylvania I no longer have to pay property taxes, because just like Ed Rendell promised, the casinos would have the state awash in money that can fully pay for our schools.
Hey, wait a minute....
Casinos only work in a “destination” city.
There is NO REASON to go to Baltimore.
Atlantic City got casinos, and Detroit, and Buffalo...does anyone see a pattern here?
Just look what it did for Atlantic City!..................
The police detail alone will cost a FORTUNE.
When will we hear of the first shooting?
“Casinos only work in a destination city.”
You should see the DUMPS that they are planning to build Three “Casino destination resorts” here in Massachusetts.
Our state government is out of their minds.
Do they take. EBT cards?
maryland is embracing a gaming industry that is fixed to bring in certain levels of revenue through the computer games. soon the fleeced will realize that the games are rigged to guarantee state monies, and they will spend their monies elsewhere...
this will be an expensive gamble for the taxpayers of maryland...
t
hey, my mom lives in baltimore....
I like “Gambling is a tax on the stupid AND the poor” even better. Cheers
“Do they take. EBT cards?”
If a casino takes EBT cards but a certain amount of the profits go to fund the EBT program does the snake choke on it’s own tail?
Uh, no. DE, PA, WV already have slot/table gambling. Guess they haven’t been fleeced, huh?
Except for some of the cool historic stuff, the sports, and Enoch Pratt Library. Oh, actually the Walters is very neat, too.
Thanks for the ping!
